A foundation member of Staff of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Olasumbo Martins has passed on.
Prof. Martins transitioned peacefully yesterday, December 9, 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 76.
He joined the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources Management at the then College of Science and Technology, University of Lagos, Abeokuta Campus, in 1987. He served as the pioneering Head of the Department of Agricultural Meteorology and Water Resources Management for nine years (1988–1996), during which he provided exemplary leadership and laid a solid foundation for the Department’s growth.
Over his illustrious career at FUNAAB, Prof. Martins held numerous impactful positions, including a Two-time Dean of the College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM) (2000–2006); Member of the University Governing Council (2001–2005); Pioneer Director of the Equipment Maintenance Centre (1997–1999), and the Chairman of the University Publication Committee (2011–2013), among other numerous leadership positions.
He retired from FUNAAB in 2018 after 31 years of dedicated service, which was preceded by a remarkable career spanning ten years at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (1977–1985) and Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (1985–1987).
In honour of his contributions, a condolence register has been opened at the Department of Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology, COLERM, for staff members to pay their respects.
