Professor (Mrs.) Eromosele Set To Deliver FUNAAB 67th Inaugural Lecture

A Professor of Industrial Chemistry and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Catherine Oluyemisi Eromosele of the Department of Chemistry, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) is set to deliver the 67th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

            According to the Chairman, Ceremonials Committee, Professor Akinjide Akinlabi, arrangements have been concluded to host the Inaugural Lecture at Professor Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 2.00 p.m.

The Chairman of the lecture is the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kolawole Salako, the sixth Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.

            The title of the Lecture is, “Chemistry, Industry and Development”.

            Professor Eromosele’s research interests are in two broad areas namely, physico chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of polymers; and raw materials research while her studies on the former have been on high tonnage synthetic industrial polymers polyvinyl chloride and nylon 6, the latter studies relate to seed oils and cellulosic fibres.

            She has published considerable number of articles in local and international journals and in

the process has supervised over 100 undergraduate projects; five masters and three doctoral theses as a major supervisor. She has also co-supervised several postgraduate students in the University.

            A notable Scholar, Professor Eromosele attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos (1969-73); Methodist Girls High School, Yaba, Lagos (1973-75, and the University of Benin, Benin City (1975-78) where she earned a Bachelors Honours degree in Industrial Chemistry. On completion of the one-year mandatory National Youth Service in 1979, she proceeded to the Victoria University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST), (1979-81) for a Masters degree in Polymer and Fibre Science under the sponsorship

of Petroleum Training Development Fund ( PTDF). In 1998 she obtained a doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of Benin, Benin City.

            She began her University academic career as an Assistant Lecturer on January 5, 1985 in the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos after which she moved to the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Yola as Lecturer II in 1988 where she worked till 2002. In 2002, she transferred her services to the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry where she rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Industrial Chemistry in 2008 undeterred by various serial interruptive relocations.

            Professor Eromosele is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (2007), and a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (2011). She has held several academic and administrative positions in the University and has also served in several committees at the Federal University of Technology, Yola among which are: Head, Department of Chemistry, Deputy Dean, School of Science & Technology Education; Warden, Nana Asmau Hall, Member of the School Board and Member of Senate.

            She also served as a member of some notable Committees which include: Member, University Ceremonial Sub-Committee on Entertainment, Member, University Council Committee on Nominees for National,  Productivity,  Order of Merit (NPM) Award, Member, University Appraisal Committee, Member, University Award of Prizes Committee, Member, Centre for Equipment Maintenance & Industrial Training (CEMIT), Member University Committee on Table Water Project, Member, Committee on Policy Linkage of Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, Universities, National & International Institutions, 2001, Chairman, School of Pure and Applied Sciences’ Strategic Planning Committee.

            An Academic per excellence, Professor Eromosele has served FUNAAB in several capacities some of which include: Co-ordinator, Pre-degree programme, Warden, IyalodeTinubu Hall, Head, Department of Chemistry, Pioneer Dean, College of Physical Sciences and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). She was once a member of various notable committees among which are: Member, Committee on the Establishment of College of Management Sciences, Member, Special Investigation Panel on Student Disturbance of 30th September 2004, Member, Admission Committee, Member,

University Senate, Member, Undergraduate Prospectus Review Committee, Member, Gender Mainstreaming Committee, Member, Users Committee on the Construction of Female Hostel, Member, Committee on Supervision, Repairs, Rehabilitation and Repainting of Student Hostels, among many others.

            The Professor of Industrial Chemistry has also held very sensitive positions in this University notably, Chairman, Students Welfare and Hostels Management Committee and Chairman, University Admissions Committee. She has served in other capacities as: Member, Governing Council of St. Albert the Great Seminary, Idowu-Offoran, Abeokuta (A degree -awarding Institution of the Catholic Church), External Examiner for Ph.D and M.Sc candidates in several Universities in Nigeria; External Assessor, for Professorial rank, to six

Nigerian Universities; Chairperson/Member, National Universities Commission (NUC), and Accreditation Team to several Universities in Nigeria.

            In 2018, the Inaugural lecturer was sponsored by the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) to present aspects of her work at the International Workshop on Advanced Polymer Science and Turbulent Drag Reduction at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. She was also sponsored by TWOWS to attend the 4th General Assembly and International Conference: Women Scientist in a Changing World in 2010.

            Prof. Eromosele is married to Professor Ighodalo Clement Eromosele, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of this University, and are blessed with children and grandchildren.
