The critical role of University laws in ensuring smooth operations and conflict management took centre stage during the 15th Webinar Series of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
Speaking on the topic, “The Imperative of University Laws and Regulations in Preventing Conflicts and Crisis Management, the Registrar, Dr. Titus Adeniyi, underscored the importance of adhering to institutional laws to foster peace, stability, and progress within the university environment.
Dr. Adeniyi acknowledged that universities, like other institutions, are not immune to the complexities of the modern world, which often give rise to conflicts. He stressed the need for effective conflict management strategies, noting that transforming disputes constructively was essential to maintaining harmony in the academic community.
Reflecting on the Nigerian University System, Dr. Adeniyi noted that crises involving academic staff, administrators, students, and university authorities have, over the years, disrupted operations and created hostilities. He warned that such conflicts, if unchecked, could hinder knowledge advancement and institutional growth.
Citing the renowned legal luminary, Chief Wole Olanipekun’s 2005 submission, he emphasised that no institution can thrive without adherence to fundamental principles of law and morality. Dr. Adeniyi highlighted the negative impact of recent disputes within the university system, reiterating the need for strict compliance with established regulations.
Applauding FUNAAB’s strides in digitalisation and its impressive national and international rankings, the Registrar called for the sustenance of a peaceful and harmonious environment to build on these achievements.
He explained that university laws, such as the Federal University Act, provide a robust framework for structure, staff conduct, and operational responsibilities. He urged all members of the University Community to familiarise themselves with these regulations, noting that adherence not only safeguards the institution’s integrity but also aligns FUNAAB with global best practices.
Dr. Adeniyi advocated for clear policies, well-defined roles, and accountability as tools to prevent crises. He encouraged staff and students to channel grievances through proper channels by laid-down guidelines, thereby promoting transparency and mutual respect.
The Registrar, therefore, expressed optimism that by respecting the laws and regulations, FUNAAB would continue to thrive as a leading academic institution, making impactful contributions to the global academic landscape.
