The Director of Sports, Mr. Bayo Oluwatoki has described the scholarship awarded to a 300-level student, Miss Aramide, Opeyemi Afisat by the University, for winning several medals for the institution at national and international competitions, as a “big surprise”.

Speaking during a chat with FUNAAB Bulletin, the Director said: “we were already contemplating the idea of pushing the reward and honour, but unknown to us that the Vice-Chancellor had gone miles ahead”.

“The scholarship award, therefore, came to us as a surprise and this has again demonstrated the fact that our Vice-Chancellor is a visionary and sport-loving leader”, he added.

He stated that the scholarship award is a good motivator to other athletes, indicating that the University is committed to rewarding those who excelled.

Mr. Oluwatoki also disclosed that the Directorate was presently working assiduously to turn other athletes to gold medalists, in future.

Miss. Aramide, a student in the Department of Statistics, College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS) was awarded scholarship, covering school fees, free residential hall space and payment of N20, 000.00 as book allowance per session, until the completion of her First Degree programme, with effect from the 2011/2012 academic session.

Aramide had done the University proud by winning gold and silver medals in the Light Weight Category at the Korean Ambassador Cup and the West African Taekwondo Championship, held in Abuja.

She had earlier won gold medals at the last edition of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA), held in Benin, Edo State.
