The scheme took off in the year 2009 at the University Health Services and has rapidly expanded with more enrollees for staff and their defendants. This scheme also accommodates students under the Tertiary Institution Students’ Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP). The NHIS provides the following services at the Directorate:
- Primary Healthcare Provision
- Pharmacy Service
- Medical Laboratory Service
