Abstract
This study analysed the activities and performance of artisanal fishing households in Ogun Waterside Area, Ogun State using data collected from sixty-seven respondents in four fishing communities in the study area. Results of the analysis of the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents indicated that the bulk of the respondents were men-fisher-folks whose households resided at least six members. Majority of the
fisher-folks were within the 31 to 60 years age bracket and were involved predominantly in the marketing of fish catch. They inherited the fishing knowledge within the household, and majority had been in artisanal fishing for more than 30 years. Results of the contingency analyses and Chi-square tests of significance however showed that the geographical location, educational status and number of hired helps of the respondents in the study area posited significant associations with the fishing activities performed by the households. Also, the geographical location, the fishing activities performed, size of hired helps, level of education of the respondents as well as the form in which fish catch was sold showed significant relationship with the annual income of the fishing households. Implications of these findings were critically examined, and pertinent recommendations were proffered based on the salient findings in the study.
