FUNAABites have long been known for their ingenuity and excellence in various legitimate entrepreneurial activities, but two outstanding students, Keni Abuobisong, a 400-Level student in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), College of Food Science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC) and Olorede Fuadul-Deen, a 400-Level student from the Department of Physics, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) have distinguished themselves through their entrepreneurial drive.
The FUNAAB Bulletin crew, represented by Olasunkanmi Olajide and Tofunmi Adebayo , caught up with them after they successfully completed the painting and cleaning of the Directorate of Audit in FUNAAB.
In this insightful conversation, Keni and Dino (as Olorede is fondly called) share their entrepreneurial journeys, the challenges they’ve faced, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.
FUNAAB Bulletin: Keni, can you tell us how your journey as an entrepreneur started?
Keni Abuobisong: My entrepreneurial journey started out of necessity and passion. I run Emma’s Kitchen and also manage the Abeokuta branch of Joecolo Facilities Services, a cleaning and facility management firm. I got my breakthrough while working on a cleaning project at an engineer’s residence in Abeokuta. The engineer, Mr. Sotwebar, was impressed with my diligence and professionalism and later recommended me for a major project at FUNAAB’s Internal Audit Unit. The Director of Internal Audit, Mrs. Yewande Bayewu, noticed my work ethic and allowed me to handle the cleaning and painting of the Directorate. That was a major turning point.
FUNAAB Bulletin: That’s inspiring. Dino, how did you get involved in painting, and what has the experience been like?
Olorede Fuadul-Deen (Dino): I’ve always had a passion for painting and artistry. I began taking it seriously when I saw an opportunity to turn it into a business. Over time, I have worked on several projects within FUNAAB, including stencil writing at the 1,000-capacity lecture theatre (now the Prof. Olusola Oyewole Lecture Theatre) and painting the Internal Audit Unit. The work has been challenging but fulfilling, and I see a bright future in this field.
FUNAAB Bulletin: What were some of the challenges you faced when starting out, and how did you overcome them?
Keni: One of the biggest challenges was building trust. It’s not easy for people to entrust you with major projects when you’re just starting. But I made sure to let my work speak for itself. Another challenge was funding, especially for materials and equipment. However, I learned to manage resources effectively and reinvest in the business.
Dino: For me, the challenge was getting clients to believe in my skills. Painting requires precision, and people often want someone with experience. But I stayed consistent, showcased my work on social media, and got referrals from satisfied clients. That has helped me grow.
FUNAAB Bulletin: Keni, coming all the way from Cross River to Abeokuta, how have you managed to balance business and academics?
Keni: It’s been tough, but proper time management has been key. I prioritize my studies while ensuring that my business runs smoothly. I also delegate responsibilities to my team members, including Godspower, a 100-level student who assists me. It’s all about discipline and focus.
FUNAAB Bulletin: What advice do you have for fellow students who wish to venture into entrepreneurship?
Dino: Start now. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Use the resources you have, be patient, and be ready to learn from your mistakes.
Keni: Be hardworking and resilient. Challenges will come, but if you stay focused and consistent, you will succeed. Also, don’t be afraid to network and put yourself out there. Opportunities often come from unexpected places.
FUNAAB Bulletin: Finally, how can people reach out to you for business enquiries?
Keni: I can be reached on 08136472893 and our services include Deep Cleaning, house cleaning and Post-construction cleaning, among others.
Dino: My contact number is 08142756157, and I am available for all kinds of painting (Homes, offices & factories, etc), including Graphic design and Stencil Writing.
The stories of Keni and Dino highlight the entrepreneurial spirit that FUNAAB nurtures in its students. Their journey serves as an inspiration for others to explore their talents and transform them into viable ventures. As the University continues to support entrepreneurial initiatives, we look forward to more success stories from FUNAABites making an impact in their chosen fields.
