Short Profile

Dr. Sadiq Adisa Abdussalaam’s research traces a combines environmental management fundamentals amd governance of urban environmental risk, culminating in a specialisation in flood risk governance and adaptive institutional systems in rapidly growing cities. He studies how urban systems, environmental risks, and human behaviour interact to shape sustainability and resilience outcomes in rapidly growing cities, with a focus on flood risk, waste systems, sustainable agriculture and adaptive governance.

He holds a B.EMT in Environmental Management and Toxicology, Masters in Environmental Management and Protection, in which he examined urban sprawl and vegetal cover loss in Abeokuta using remote sensing and GIS, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Management, all from FUNAAB. His doctoral research developed an institutional framework for community-based flood disaster management in flood-prone communities of Lagos State, analysing how formal governance structures interact with local vulnerability, participation, and adaptive capacity. This progression, from mapping how cities physically expand to examining how they are governed under environmental stress, now anchors his broader research interest in how urban systems, environmental risks, and human behaviour interact to shape sustainability and resilience outcomes in rapidly growing cities.

Dr. Abdussalaam argues that resilience in rapidly urbanising African cities should depend less on infrastructure alone than on the institutions and behaviours that determine how that infrastructure is used, maintained, and adapted. Alongside his research, he teaches climate change and environmental planning, supervises undergraduate and post graduate research, and contributes to community in various capacities especially providing relief to victims of disasters through Humanity First Nigeria.
