ADEBAYO, Kafayat Omowunmi

LinkedIn

Short Profile

Kafayat O. Adebayo (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer with over ten years work experience in the field of Animal Nutrition with specialization in Ruminant Nutrition. She teaches courses such as Nutrient Requirement of Farm Animals, Ruminant Nutrition, Nigeria Feeds and Feedstuffs, Feed Safety and Quality Control, Micro livestock Nutrition at the undergraduate level and Large Ruminant Nutrition, Sheep and Goat Nutrition, Dairy Chemistry and Technology at the post graduate level.  Her research focus has been majorly on the use of feed additives to manipulate rumen fermentation for improved nutrient utilization and a safer environment, through reduction of methane gas production from ruminants. Over the years she has also identified and carried out nutritive evaluation of some browse plants that can be used for feeding ruminants in the dry season and also carried out research on improvement of the nutritive value of feedstuffs such as crop residues and agro-industrial by-products which are available for ruminant feeding in the dry season using various processing methods.

Dr. (Mrs.) Adebayo has worked on the use of fibrolytic enzymes as feed additive in small and large ruminants’ diets and presently her focus is on phytogenic feed additives. She has utilized bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), scent leaf (Ocimum gratissimum), Guinea hen weed (Petiveria alliacea) clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and Brimstone tree (Morinda lucida) powder and extract as rumen modifiers. Her current research is on Phyllantus amarus and Ficus thoningii leaf powder and aqueous extract as rumen modifier for improved nutrient utilization and production performance in West African dwarf goats. Her research on fibrolytic enzyme won the Step-B Innovators of Tomorrow (IOT) World Bank Grant in 2010 and the research on the use of scent leaf powder and extract as phytogenic additive in the diet of West African dwarf goats also won the TETFUND (Tertiary Education Trust Fund) grant in 2017.

Dr. Kafayat Adebayo has supervised fifty-nine students at the undergraduate level and over twenty-five students at postgraduate level as major and co-supervisors. She has forty (40) journal articles and twenty (22) referred conference proceedings to her credit. She is a member of some professional bodies such as Nigerian Society for Animal Production, Animal Science Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, International Goat Association, and Nigerian Association of University Women.  She was admitted to the Roll of Honour, Member of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production “MNSAP” by the Nigerian Society for Animal Production in March, 2020.
