Professor Jacob K. Akintunde is a Professor of Molecular Toxicology and Medical Biochemistry in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Biosciences, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. He is a multidisciplinary biomedical scientist with expertise in molecular toxicology, medical and pharmaceutical biochemistry, molecular drug metabolism, pharmacogenomics, toxicogenomics, molecular biology, and functional food research.
He obtained his M.Sc. in Biochemistry, specializing in Molecular Drug Metabolism and Toxicology, from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He bagged a Postgraduate Diploma in Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the African Renaissance Institute of Science and Technology (ARIST), Abuja, Nigeria; and got a Ph.D. in Applied Biochemistry focusing on Reproductive Toxicology from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. Before joining FUNAAB in 2017, Professor Akintunde served as a Lecturer II in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Kwara State University, Nigeria, and subsequently as a Lecturer I in the Faculty of Public Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria
His research focuses on elucidating the biochemical, molecular, cellular, and toxicological mechanisms underlying human diseases and environmental toxicant-induced organ dysfunction. His research interests encompass neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, including Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, hypertension, neurotoxicity, reproductive and cardiovascular toxicology, drug metabolism, chemoprevention, and functional food-based therapeutics. He is also involved in developing novel therapeutic products for cancers, metabolic diseases, and carcinogen-associated genetic and epigenetic alterations.
Professor Akintunde has supervised many MSc and PhD students and has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has attracted and participated in several research grants, including TETFund-funded projects, and has received recognitions for his academic and research contributions, including an Undergraduate Scholarship Award (2001), the Research for Innovation (R4i) and Creative Writing Awards (2023), and recognition among the Top 500 Nigerian authors/scientists in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology in 2020 and during 2021–2025. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Toxicology (SOT) and the Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals Association of Nigeria.
