Dr. (Mrs.) Victoria Olubunmi A. Ojo (Nee Sodeinde) is an academic Lecturer in the Department of Pasture and Range Management, College of Animal Science and Livestock Production, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). She got her Ordinary National Diploma certificate from Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, Oyo State in 1992. She later had her B. Agric, M. Agric and Ph. D degrees in Animal Science with specialization in Forage Science from the prestigious FUNAAB in the years 1998, 2005 and 2011 respectively.
She joined FUNAAB as an Assistant Lecturer on January 2nd, 2008 and rose through the ranks to become a Senior Lecturer on October 1st, 2017. She has won several research grants sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the World Bank of Africa’s Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment program. This include research grants titled “Legume based pellets as dry season feed resources for ruminant animals” in 2014 and “Evaluation of the nutritive quality of grass foliage – browse legume seeds silage as dry season feed for ruminants” in 2017 among many. She was a Mentee Fellow of Africa Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) fellowship by the International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Gender and Diversity Program in 2010, and currently, she is the Acting Head of the Department of Pasture and Range Management. She also received Commendation in 2018 from the University Registrar for her contribution towards the overall success of the first semester examination for 2016/2017 Academic Session.
Her research interests centre on the production, management, improvement, conservation, and utilization of natural and cultivated pasture. The early stage of her research involved quality and biomass improvements of field pasture crops through skillful manipulation of sward dynamics and resource inputs. This involved the screening and selection of productive pasture plant accessions, performance evaluation of pasture plants sown as pure and mixed stands, use of different organic amendments, and optimizing management parameters (e.g. stage, height, and interval at harvesting, weeding management. etc.). Over time, she has dedicated a great deal of research to the conservation of produced forages as hay, silage, and pellets, with more focus on the production of silage and pellets and improving their quality through the inclusion of seeds of some tropical tree legumes.
Generally, her research involves exploring low-cost production techniques to improve ruminant livestock production while taking the circular economy into account. She has dedicated a great deal of research to environmental sustainability, particularly through the curtailment of CH4 gas emission, which is the major greenhouse gas associated with ruminant livestock production.
Her research has resulted in an extensive publication list, authoring 68 local and international journal articles and 58 national and international conference refereed proceedings. Her publications have local and international relevance and have come through effective collaborations with other authors that are within and outside her discipline. She has taught several courses in Forage Production, Rangeland and Sown Pasture Management, Conservation and Utilization by livestocks at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has successfully supervised 2 Doctoral (Ph.D.) theses, 16 Master of Agriculture (M. Agric.) dissertations, 1 PGD, and 140 Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) students research projects.
Beyond teaching and research, Dr. (Mrs.) Victoria Olubunmi A. Ojo has served in administrative positions within the University, including her position as the Coordinator for Agriculture for FUNAAB’s Directorate of Grants Management, and her current capacity as the acting head of the Department. She actively involves in training held by the University including the Advanced Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institution, Grant Sourcing and Proposal Writing, Modern Methods of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, etc.
She belongs to many academic and professional bodies within and outside the shores of Nigeria, some of which includes: the Nigeria Society for Animal Production, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, Society for Grassland Research and Development in Nigeria, British Grassland Society and Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World. She is a Reviewer for some local and international journals.
Dr. (Mrs.) Victoria Olubunmi A. Ojo is inspired by her passion for research and is committed to using her research to advance society in the best way that she possibly can. She has high aspirations and constantly seeks to contribute to humanity most especially, upcoming young ones and society at large. She is blessed with wonderful family.
