Prof.

OLANITE Jimoh Alao

Short Profile

Professor J. A. Olanite obtained B. Agriculture in Animal Production and Ph.D. in Pasture Agronomy and Forage Utilization from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU) and University of Ibadan in 1987 and 2003, respectively. He has over 25 years of teaching and research experience in the university system having joined Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in 1998. His research interest and activity revolve around agronomic and nutritive evaluation of indigenous forage species with the view to harnessing the vast forage resources in the country for improved ruminant production. He has published over 70 scholarly articles in high impact journals locally and internationally; and has supervised well over 200 undergraduate research projects, 38 M. Agric. Dissertations and 7 Ph.D. Theses. Professor Olanite has won several research grants locally and internationally, among which are the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Research Grants to conduct researches titled: (i) Evaluation of two herbaceous legumes-maize mixtures for dry season supplementation of Muturu cattle under crop-livestock management in Southwest Nigeria in 2011 (ii) Mitigating the impact of pastoral/nomadic grazing on the natural ecosystem and rural livelihoods in Yewa Division of Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria in 2012 (iii) Exploring commercial year-round hay production and haulage for ex situ feeding of cattle in the livestock transformation plan for Nigeria in 2019, and (iv) International Grant for an innovative research on ‘Development of cost-effective nutritive feeds for livestock (cattle, sheep, goats) from locally available agricultural by-products’ by the United Kingdom Government through the African Agricultural Knowledge Transfer Partnership (AAKTP) in 2023. He has, at various times, been Acting, and later, Substantive Head, Department of Pasture and Range Management. He is a Registered Animal Scientist, a member of several Professional Bodies and National President of Society for Grassland Research and Development in Nigeria.
