Short Profile

My research efforts over the years as a Veterinary Pathologist cover a broad range of Pathology of both infectious and non-infectious diseases and conditions of domestic animals. Major areas of focus include studies on pathogens, pathogenesis and pathology associated with respiratory diseases of pigs and ruminants, nutritional and toxicological pathology, tumours and congenital conditions in different animal species.

However, my major research focus has been on Respiratory Pathology of domestic animals in which the prevalence, aetiology, pathology, pathogenesis of respiratory diseases of pigs and ruminants were investigated. I have been able to investigate bacterial pathogens causing Enzootic pneumonia in pigs and identified Mycoplasma hyopneumonia (MHYO) as the major organism responsible for development of the disease in the pig in Southwest Nigeria.

Enzootic Pneumonia causes a huge economic loss in pig industry but still largely underestimated. I have been able to detect MHYO antigen on the bronchiolar epithelial cells in affected pigs using immunohistochemistry (IHC). I have also studied the pathogenicity and pathogenesis of the Nigeria strain of this organism using ultrastructural pathological changes by electron microscopy. This is the first investigative study on the patholopgy and  pathogenecityof MHYO strain in growing-finishing pigs in Nigeria. Further studies are on-going on the isolation and molecular characterization of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae strain detected in swine pneumonic lungs in the previous studies, as well as pathology and molecular epidemiology of viral respiratory diseases in commercial piggeries in Nigeria. In another study using IHC test, I was able to detect a zoonotic pathogen known as Swine influenza virus (HINI) from the lungs of naturally infected pigs. Swine influenza virus HINI is known to cause serious respiratory disease in the pig and has been reported to infect human especially pig workers.

Over the years, I have been involved in various research in the field of nutritional and toxicological pathology. This consists of a combination of pathology knowledge and biochemical changes to study the responses of cells, tissues and organs to various xenobiotic, rodenticides and toxic agents.

In the course of my research, in collaboration with other researchers, we have been able to use histopathology as a diagnostic tool in animal models to evaluate therapeutic activities and to identify the effect andpotential of promising plant extracts to treat or prevent various diseases in domestic animals and human. Some of these studies have been completed but yet to be published. Some neoplastic conditions were also documented in domestic animals and poultry.

The summary of my research activities has shown diverse contributions to the field of Veterinary Pathology that a Veterinary Pathologist can make to the global scientific endeavour specifically to the evolution and growth of veterinary pathology in the 21st century.
