Short Profile

My postgraduate training gave me a broad background in Analytical, Environmental and Food Chemistry. Further research provided the opportunity of depth of knowledge in diverse analyses of chemical parameters of environmental importance. In this regard my contribution to knowledge is primarily on application of analytical techniques to detect and characterize toxic materials and its health implication in the environment, as well as production and analysis of starch novel of starch from sources and biogas for domestic and industrial uses.

Environmental Assessment of Organic Pollutants.

I demonstrated the sensitivity and specificity of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry as versatile analytical techniques. Heavy metals as toxicants (lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, chromium and iron etc) in various environmental media were determined in water (Publications 28,21,20,17,16, 14,15,12, 10 and soil nutrients and heavy metal contents was assessed. Findings showed that manure used in organic farming has liming effect on the soil while nutrients are concentrated at the soil surface (Publication 34). Anthropogenic activities from different urban land uses contribute significantly to the pollution levels (Publications 38 and 39).

Health Risk Assessment of Pollutants in the Environment .

Furthermore, pollutants in the environment were reported to have diverse effects on human health. I also investigated the health implication of some pollutants such as air pollutants in cement factory, steel foundry and major highways to examine the effects on the environment with particular reference to humans. The findings indicated unacceptably high concentrations of total suspended particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Water quality of hand–dug wells, boreholes and public water sources were analysed and results indicated higher physicochemical parameters and presence of some microorganisms including coliforms (Publications 28, 27, 26, 23,22,21,17,16,14,12 and 36).

Toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remains a global challenge. PAHs on selected dumpsite soils were examined to provide base line data on Nigeria dumpsites. It was observed that some dumpsites were heavily polluted with PAHs due to the types of materials deposited on the sites (Publication 24). PAHs were also determined in water from various sources and human health risk estimated.  The reports showed higher carcinogenic risks in children than adults (Publication 33). Very high concentrations of Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and heavy metals were found in lake water, sediments and fish above the World Health Organization (WHO) limits (Publication 31). Aquatic organisms as bio-indicators of PAHs pollution and its associated health risk were also investigated and concentrations of total PAHs was higher in fish than acceptable limits (Publication 40). In this vein, bisphenol A (BPA) and diisobutylphthalate (DIBP) in soil were found to induce oxidative stress and DNA damage in earthworms (Publication 41).

Analytical and Food Chemistry

Analysis of Vitamin C from raw and blanched vegetables at different time intervals was determined. The findings revealed that increase in duration of blanching caused reduction in level of the Vitamin. Extraction and compositional analysis of oil from under-utilized seed oils were studied. Findings showed that the oils obtained were comparable in quality to standard oils. In search for novel, cheap and sustainable raw materials for the production of starch due to overdependence on corn starch. I conducted research on isolation, physical and chemical modifications and characterization of the starch produced from under-utilized cereals such as varieties of Sorghum and Acha. The starch obtained were of comparable quality to corn starch which is used in food and pharmaceutical industries (Publications 25, 19,13,9,8,7, 6,4,3,2 and 1). Production of biogas using faecal sludge co-digested with various types of organic feed stock materials was investigated and materials were effective in producing quality biogas and nutrient rich bio-slurries as organic fertilizer (Publication 35).  Biogas was highly rich in methane and comparatively more efficient than liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene in terms of cooking time (Publication 37).

The frontiers of knowledge have also been extended by attending conferences and presentation of scientific paper as evidenced in the listed conference papers (Publications 44, 45, 46 and 47).

In view of the fact that most of my studies centred on environmental pollution assessment using principles of analytical chemistry, it is appropriate that my Professorship be in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry.
