Short Profile

Dr. Sunday M. A. POSU holds PhD (Economics) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,
after bagging M.Phil. (Economics) and M.Sc. (Economics) from University of Ibadan, Ibadan;
and B.Sc. (Hons) in Economics from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University),
Ago-Iwoye. He joined the academic profession as a Graduate Assistant in 1995 without a break
to date. Dr. Posu has published in reputable local and international journals. He has to his credit
thirty-one published journal articles, one book, six book chapters, three conference proceedings,
and three conference papers read.
He has special research interest in Environmental Economics as part of his specific contributions
to knowledge and the literature on environmental economics. One study shed light on the
implications of the sign of the proxy used to measure pollution and its effect on the shape and
interpretation of the resulting EKC shape. Increase in environmental degradation is a negative
measure of pollution while environmental quality is a positive one. With environmental
degradation, the study found U-shaped EKC for Nigeria but inverted U-shaped EKC when
pollution level was measured and interpreted by environmental quality. A study that investigated
the veracity of the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) failed to validate PHH in Nigeria. Increase
in CO 2 emissions discouraged FDI. The study concluded that factors different from weak
environmental regulations propelled FDI inflows in Nigeria but that FDI could increase with
stringent environmental laws. A study observed that rebasing GDP, as the case was in 2014 in
Nigeria, does not imply increase in the volume and real value of national output. The study found
U-shaped and N-shaped EKC for Nigeria where the two results showed that CO 2 was on the rise,
although the structural breakpoint in 1987 suggested decrease in pollution level.
Another study as a quest into sustainable environment amidst trade intensity and economic
growth in 15 oil-producing developing countries showed that economic growth had positive and
significant effect on environment while trade intensity negatively and significantly affected
environment. Thus, the scale of production from crude oil was a cause for environmental
degradation in the 15 oil-producing developing economies examined. A study on a regional
dimension showed that wastes from global industrial activity and its related final products

2

constituted as much as 65% of global wastes and were statistically significant causative agents of
environmental pollution, which could abate with the use of renewable energy. Another study
found regional population and regional industrial output as the major drivers of global
temperature while regional energy policy provided weak evidence on triggering CO 2 emission
and, thus, climate change. On the Sub-Saharan Africa, a study on the causal link among FDI,
pollution, and economic growth established a unidirectional causality running from FDI to GDP
and from CO 2 to FDI. FDI had positive and significant effect on economic growth while
economic growth propelled pollution density.
Dr. S. M. A. Posu is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Federal University of
Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State where he was Acting Head, Department of Economics for
four years. Prior to this, he lectured at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye; Osun State
University, Osogbo; and Crescent University, Abeokuta. He is both Examiner and Assessor to
some recognised professional examination bodies; including those that have migrated to using
RM Assessor 3 software. He is married and blessed with kids.
