WHETO, Mathew

CV

Short Profile

Dr. Wheto, Mathew is an Animal breeder, geneticist and biotechnologist with a lot of research experience in quantitative and genomic analysis. He is a Registered Animal Scientist (RAS) and a Lecturer I in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. He is a research scientist working with Program for Emerging Agricultural Research leadership (PEARL) sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gate foundation on the use of genomic selection and proteomics to identify superior indigenous chicken’s line for growth and egg traits. He was a visiting scholar to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA for three month working on gene expression and transcriptomic expression of heat tolerance traits in temperate and tropical breed of cattle.

Dr. Wheto is a member of many professional bodies such as Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), World Poultry Science Association (WPSA) Nigerian Branch, Nigeria Society for Animal Production (NSAP), Genetic Society of Nigeria (GSN) and a member of Editorial Board, Nigeria Journal of Biotechnology. He is also a seasoned reviewers for many academics journal within and outside the country. Dr, Wheto is also versatile in the use of statistical, molecular and some Bioinformatics tools which include SAS, DNAsp, MEGA, ClustalW/X, Bioedit, Codoncode Aligner, qPCR/PCR machine, Primer3. He has run analyses include: Single nucleotide Polymorphism detection, multiple sequences Alignment, Phylogeny tree, Secondary and Tertiary structure prediction, Annotation of sequences using Map viewer, Primer design using Primer3.

Wheto has a humble background and have established connections with professional colleagues within and outside the country. He can work independently and can equally work with people of diverse cultural backgrounds to achieve desired objectives at all times. He has Co-supervised more than five (5) M.Agric. students and many undergraduate students working on genetic variation and sequence analysis of some selected immune response and growth related gene in both small ruminant and the Nigerian indigenous chicken. The long-term goal of his research activities is to molecularly characterize the Nigerian ruminant and chicken population using candidate gene approach, to carry out genetic diversity in immune related genes and development of chicken lines for the Nigerian environment.

  • Bachelor of Agriculture     University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State        1995 – 2000
  • M. Agric (Animal Breeding and Genetics)     University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State        2002 – 2005
  • PhD (Animal Biotechnology)       Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State        2009 – 2012

Previous research was conducted into phenotypic characterisation of crossbred between indigenous and exotic strains of chickens as part of the evaluation of Nigeria’s animal resources. The population of local chickens in Nigeria is estimated to be 120 million and the contribution being made by chickens to food and income needs of the people, especially rural dwellers, justified this emphasis.

Current research is in animal molecular genetics and biotechnology. Working with Dr Ikhide Imumorin at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA and other researchers at University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, I have diversified my PhD research work into ruminant genetics with specialisation in molecular animal genetics. My doctoral thesis research was titled “Molecular Genetic Variation and Diversity of Toll-like Receptor Genes in Nigerian Goat Breeds”.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) family of proteins are vital to immune function through the sensing of pathogenic agents and initiation of an appropriate immune response. Toll-like receptors are a highly conserved group of proteins that have been identified in organisms as diverse as insects and mammals. TLRs provide the host with a means of discriminating foreign from self and as such, they function at the earliest stages of immune development. Variations in TLR abundance have been associated with altered immune responsiveness. Very little molecular genetic analysis has been carried out in Nigerian livestock to understand genetic diversity, population structure and possible applications to marker-assisted selection. The aim of the project is to screen several TLR genes for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), ascertain their molecular diversity and association with physiological indices in Nigerian goats. So far, I have successfully cloned and sequenced TLR1, TLR2, TLR3 and TLR5 genes in Nigerian goats by PCR, whereupon some SNPs were identified and analysed in these goat populations. Results of this work are being prepared for submission to scientific journal.
