Stakeholders Charged to Empower African Agriculture through Precision Farming

…As AfCPA 2024 Begins at FUNAAB

The 3rd African Conference on Precision Agriculture (AfCPA) began today, December 3, 2024, at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), with a gathering of key stakeholders,s, including scientists, policymakers, extension staff, crop consultants, agronomists, and service providers.

The mission of the conference was to connect science and practice to implement precision agriculture throughout Africa, highlighting new advances in the field

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Kola Adebayo, emphasised the importance of utilising technological innovation to advance Africa’s agricultural renaissance.

He stressed the need for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices in light of the continent’s growing population and increasing pressure on food systems.

The Vice-Chancellor noted the role of precision agriculture in optimising resource use, enhancing productivity, and addressing food security challenges, climate change impacts, and empowering smallholder farmers. He encouraged participants to collaborate, share knowledge, and work towards building a future where African agriculture flourishes.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LoC), Prof. John Oyedepo, reiterated the mission of AfCPA to foster collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing to strengthen the precision agriculture community in Africa. Prof. Oyedepo emphasised the inclusivity of the conference with multiple satellite locations across the continent, providing opportunities for local engagement and tailored solutions.

Also, the Dean, College of Biosciences, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, emphasised the importance of addressing food security, environmental impact, and climate change through precision agriculture. She stressed the role of technology in improving crop yield while minimising negative effects on the environment and human health.

The conference is expected to generate impactful outcomes for FUNAAB and the wider society.
