As part of their official visit to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), a high-profile delegation from The Bahamas, led by Ambassador (Dr.) Godfrey Eneas and his wife, Mrs. Sandra Eneas, paid homage to the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Okukenu IV.

During the visit, the Alake underscored the growing challenges of food insecurity and rising food costs, urging Ambassador Eneas to collaborate with FUNAAB in leveraging agricultural innovations for sustainable solutions. The highly revered monarch reaffirmed the University’s dedication to strengthening its partnership with The Bahamas and encouraged the delegation to explore Abeokuta’s rich cultural heritage.

In an emotional moment, Ambassador Eneas recounted his deep ancestral ties to Egbaland, revealing that his great-grandfather was originally from the region before being forcefully taken to The Bahamas during the transatlantic slave trade. He described the visit as a profound homecoming experience. Accompanying Ambassador Eneas to the Alake’s Palace, were Prof. Akin Omotayo and the Director of the Institute for Communication and General Studies (ICGNS), Prof. Remilekun Aduradola.

A key highlight of their itinerary was a tour of the Autonomous Republic of Ijegba (ARI), the iconic residence of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, now ceded to FUNAAB. The delegation explored the site, admiring its symbolic sculptures and artistic expressions.

The delegation extended their visit to Ibadan, where they toured the University College Hospital (UCH), receiving a warm reception and a guided tour of the Department of Immunology. They also visited the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s premier university, exploring its historic landmarks and academic facilities.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm reception from FUNAAB and the people of Abeokuta, Ambassador Eneas commended the University’s commitment to fostering international academic and cultural relations. He described the visit as an enriching experience, offering invaluable insights into the region’s agricultural potential and historical significance.

The delegation also visited Olumo Rock, Egba Museum, and Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), among others.
