The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako has commended the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the University’s Biotechnology Centre for organizing a 4 Day Meeting and Courses on the “Application of Molecular Techniques in the Study of Bacteria Associated with Crops”.
Represented by the Head, Department of Pure and Applied Botany, Prof. Iyabo Kehinde, Prof. Salako described Biotechnology as the application of Technology to enhance, manipulate and harness the power of biological organisms for practical use.
He said that Biotechnology is a broad field that draws on all aspects of Biological Sciences and Mathematics to provide important solutions to the biomedical, agricultural and environmental problems.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that FUNAAB’s Biotechnology Centre could not afford to sit from the bench but rather be an active player to effectively advance the Science of Agricultural Biotechnology and safeguard human environment.
He added that Biotechnology as part of Agricultural Research is being used to develop Biofertilizers from microorganisms, which play several roles in soil fertility, crop productivity and profitability.
He stated further that Biofertilizers are the products containing living cells of different types of beneficial microbes, which are also good for decomposition of organic matter in the soil and increase essential macronutrients and micronutrients availability to crop plants.
Prof. Salako hinted that FUNAAB’s Biotechnology Centre was founded in the year 2000 in line with the vision of the University to be a Centre of Excellence in knowledge generation for global development and the sustenance of an environmentally friendly society.
The Centre runs hands-on-training molecular techniques, tissue culture and cell propagation and bioinformatics.
Earlier, the Director of the Biotechnology Centre, Dr. Olusegun Obadina welcolmed participants to the 4-Day Training Programme which he described as educative and revealing.
The representative of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, Italy, Dr. Giuliano Degrassi delivered the Goodwill Message of ICGEB, charging participants to feel free to ask questions about the Centre and its activities.
