In what is fast becoming a custom of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, has once again extended his support to indigent students by giving 50 beneficiaries some packs of food items as a way of supporting and wishing them success as they commence their Second Semester Examination.
Speaking during the presentation of the items at the Unity Building, the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by Dr. Adio Akamo, charged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the Vice-Chancellor’s kind gesture by working hard and performing exceptionally in their studies.
Wishing them success in their examinations, Prof. Kehinde enjoined them to be good ambassadors of the University in character and learning, which would, in turn, encourage more of such gestures.
Similarly, Mrs. Oluwakemi Fashina, Founder of LAKEM Global Foundation, also gave some food items to another 25 students as a way of support and encouragement, during the examination period.
According to her, giving the students food items was her way of showing love to them and contributing her quota in assisting the Student Affairs Unit, in particular and the University, in general.
Stating the reason behind her kind gesture, Mrs. Fashina, popularly known as Mamiwater,
stressed that she believed that when the students feed well, it would increase their ability and strength to study and achieve greater academic success.
Appreciating the Vice-Chancellor and Mrs. Fashina, the Dean, Students Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, commended them for extending their love and kindness to the students, especially during this period of economic challenges.
Prof. Adeosun encouraged the beneficiaries to appreciate the kind gesture by performing excellently in their examinations, adding that it was a rare opportunity which even he, as a poor student during his own time, did not have.
Highlighting the lessons to be learned from the gesture, he stressed that being an indigent student today was not a determinant of their success in the future but a push towards making them work hard to achieve success.
Using himself as an example, he noted that with determination and hard work, they might end up being more successful than most of their contemporaries who were from wealthy families.
Commenting further, the Dean of Students Affairs noted that the only way the beneficiaries could show their appreciation to those who had assisted them was by intensifying their efforts in their studies and also remembering to pass on the kindness when they become successful in life.
The food items from the Vice-Chancellor included some packs of garri, spaghetti, tomato paste, salt, vegetable oil with a financial support for each student, while LAKEM Foundation gave 25 packs of food items consisting of rice, garri, salt, vegetable oil, pepper and sugar.
