VC Sets October Date for COLCOMPS Building, Reaffirms Drive for Digital Excellence

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, on September 10, 2025, announced that construction of the permanent building for the newly established College of Computing Sciences (COLCOMPS) would commence in October 2025, reaffirming Management’s commitment to positioning the College as a hub of innovation, research, and digital transformation.

Prof. Kehinde, who gave the assurance during his inspection visit to the College, reiterated Management’s determination to make COLCOMPS a centre of excellence that would produce well-trained graduates capable of positively impacting society. He charged staff to remain steadfast and dedicated to the vision of nurturing competent professionals, stressing that the quality of graduates would reflect the collective efforts of the College community.

According to him, “The products that will come from here are people who will be well baked in all areas. It will demand a lot from us, and I plead with you to give it your best. Whatever challenges may arise, be determined to overcome them.”

Highlighting Management’s support, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that the University had dedicated its 2025 TETFund annual intervention to the construction of the COLCOMPS building. He disclosed that the award letter had already been issued and that the first tranche of funds had been requested.

“By October 2025, construction will commence, and within one year, we expect the building to be completed and handed over. We want you to own this project because it is for your benefit. We consulted you on the site, and the location beside Mahmood Yakubu Lecturer Theatre, opposite the 250-capacity Computer Laboratory, was chosen collectively,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

He further encouraged the Dean, Heads of Departments, and Lecturers to interface with the contractor to ensure the delivery of a befitting structure, assuring that a Users’ Committee would also be monitoring progress. He added that the University was also pursuing another intervention to provide a separate Computer Laboratory building for the College.

Earlier, in her Welcome Address at the inaugural meeting of the College Board, the Dean, Prof. Oluwasefunmi Arogundade, expressed profound gratitude to the University Management for its vision and support. She described the establishment of COLCOMPS as a historic milestone and the product of “collective sacrifice, visionary leadership, and resilience of academic staff.”

Prof. Arogundade lauded the Vice-Chancellor for his foresight, noting that history would be kind to him for expanding the frontiers of Computing Sciences in the University. She emphasised that the College would stand as a beacon of innovation, research, and collaboration, with the promise of shaping the digital future of society.

“With wisdom, foresight, and shared commitment, COLCOMPS will grow into a world-class citadel of academic excellence,” she affirmed.

Meanwhile, the inspection visit and the inaugural College Board meeting symbolised the beginning of a new era for COLCOMPS.
