President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29, 2023, was inaugurated as the 16th President of Nigeria. He is a distinguished leader with a legacy of service, governance, and political reform. Born in 1952 in Lagos into a merchant family, he is the son of Abibatu Mogaji, the late Ìyá l’ọ́jà (market leader) of Lagos.
President Tinubu began his educational journey at St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos, and continued at Children’s Home School, Ibadan. He later pursued higher education in the United States, earning a degree in Accounting from Chicago State University in 1979.
Tinubu gained extensive professional experience in the United States, working with renowned organisations such as Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, and GTE Services Corporation. Upon his return to Nigeria in 1983, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria, where he ascended to the position of an executive.
Asiwaju Tinubu’s political career began in 1991 when he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was elected Senator for Lagos West in 1992. Following the dissolution of the Senate in 1993, Asiwaju Tinubu emerged as a pro-democracy activist, championing Nigeria’s return to civilian governance as a member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
In 1999, Tinubu was elected Governor of Lagos State, a role he held for two terms until 2007. His administration implemented transformative projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security. Notably, he established new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and spearheaded policies that laid the foundation for Lagos’ economic and infrastructural growth.
A Master Strategist and Coalition Builder, Asiwaju Tinubu played a pivotal role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, contributing to the election victories of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and 2019. In 2023, Tinubu was elected President of Nigeria after defeating notable candidates like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
As President, Tinubu has initiated bold economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, saving the nation billions of dollars annually. His leadership is marked by appointments to revitalise critical institutions like the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
President Tinubu’s decades-long influence in Nigerian politics is underscored by his unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance, and national development. His ability to unite diverse ethnic and religious groups highlights his strategic leadership and dedication to Nigeria’s progress.
He is married to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and together, they are blessed with children.
