2017/2018 Orientation Programme Be Focused … VC Charges New Students

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako has charged newly admitted students of the University to be focused and be of good character as the University has zero tolerance for indiscipline and other social vices.

Giving this charge at the 2017/2018 Orientation programme, organised for the new students, Professor Salako who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic) (Designate), Professor Morenike Dipeolu stressed the need for students to take their academics seriously if they are desirous of graduating in flying colours, adding that only those found worthy in character and in learning would be awarded the degree of the Institution.

According to him, with good character and academic excellence, there is no challenge too great for them to overcome in life. Professor Salako admonished them to make good use of their time and opportunity as students of the University to get the best out of the system, stating that the University is blessed with some of the best hands needed to achieve their goals.

Speaking on the academic requirements expected of them, Professor Salako disclosed that students must have at least 70 per cent attendance in class before they will be allowed to write examination. He pointed out that the University has zero tolerance for examination malpractice and other sharp practices, adding that any student caught in the act will be made to face the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to feel free to share their challenges with the Student Affair and the Counselling Unit of the University, adding that for matters requiring the attention of the DVC (Academic) or that of the Vice-Chancellor, the channel of communication to be followed is from their Head of Department, to the Dean, to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and finally to the Vice-Chancellor.

Earlier in a Presentation on the Historical Evolution of the University, its Management and Student Relationship, the Registrar, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola said that the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State (FUNAAB) was established on January 1, 1988 by the Federal Government when four Universities of Technology, earlier merged in 1984, were demerged.

According to him, this led to the creation of the first two Universities of Agriculture in Abeokuta and Makurdi and later a third one in Umudike. The Registrar said in December 1997, the University completed movement to its permanent site on a 10,000-hectare campus, noting that since the existence of the University 30 years ago it has had several Chancellors, Pro-Chancellors and Governing Council Chairmen, Vice-Chancellors, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrars, Bursars and University Librarians.

Speaking on Student Relationship, Dr. Adekola pointed “out that students have a prime place in the affairs of the University because they are critical stakeholders in the system and for this reason, the University has a Division of Student Affairs which is saddled with the responsibility of attending to all issues affecting students and ensuring that they stay close to Management by bridging all communication gaps. He urged the students to be good ambassadors of the University wherever they find themselves.

Giving a brief on the University Library, the Acting University Librarian, Dr. Fehintola Onifade who was represented by Mrs. Bosede Akintola described the library as a repository of knowledge where students can study in a serene environment.

She educated the students on the good use of library, pointing out that aside the main University Library, nine out of the institution’s 10 Colleges have Libraries with machineries being put in place for the tenth.

Dr. Onifade enjoined the new students to register and start early to plan for the grade they intend to graduate with by taking advantage of the variety of materials readily available in the Library.

In his structural presentation, the Director, Physical Planning Unit, Arch. Babatunde Anasanwo acquainted them with the Administrative Buildings, Colleges, Units, Centres and lecture theatres in the Institution.

Other presentations made at the Orientation were on Student Affairs Services; transportation; self-defeating behaviour; health talk; leadership skill, patriotism and nationalism; counselling services, effective method of studying; sexual relationship, among students on campus; students accommodation, hostel facilities and use; Student Unionism; decent dressing and image of the University; examination rules and regulations; sports and many more.
