The Department of Pure and Applied Botany Student Association of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), recently held a Genomic Workshop at the College of Biosciences (COLBIOS).

In her Keynote Address, the Dean, COLBIOS, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde stated that the event was aimed at delving into the theme of impact and explore the revolutionary potential of genomics in the field of botany.

Represented by Prof. Gabriel Dedeke, she was thrilled to share highlights from the groundbreaking event with the interactive session facilitated by Genomac Hub experts.

In his Address, the CEO of Genomac Hub, Mr. Oluwaseyi Olawale, enlightened the participants with insights into the transformative power of genomics.

Mr. Olawale emphasised the ability to revolutionise the understanding of Plant Biology, adding that critical challenges such as climate change, food security and bio-diversity conservation could be addressed.

Highpoints were keynote presentations and series of thought -provoking presentations, including panel discussions, featuring renowned Scientists, Researchers and industry professionals who shared their ground breaking research, innovative technologies, and real life applications of genomics in botany.

Meanwhile, topics ranged from genomics-driven breeding for crop improvement to the identification and conservation of endangered plant species using genomic and bio informatics tools.

Students had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification and bioinformatics analysis.

The practical sessions provided the students with valuable insights into the methodologies and techniques employed in genomics research.

The Genomic program provided a platform for networking and collaboration as students had the opportunity to connect with professionals in the field, fostering new relationship and exploring potential avenues for future research and internships.

The program also served as a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaborations, demonstrating potentials for merging genomics research with other branches of botany and related fields.

In their separate responses, the students expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Genomac Hub for their support and collaboration in organising the remarkable event, noting that the expertise, resources, and commitment to advancing genomics have been invaluable in making the program a resounding success.

Appreciating all participants who made the event possible, the students said that the genomics event was a resounding success as it provided a platform for students to gain insights into the world of genomics and its potential impact in the field of botany.
