The Biotechnology Centre of the University has organised a 3-day “Hands-On Workshop on Molecular Biology” for graduates and undergraduates from diverse backgrounds of study. Declaring the workshop open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako said the University was currently reaping the gains of its huge investment, which he noted, has produced top-rated researchers that had contributed immeasurably to agricultural development in Nigeria.
Represented by the Dean, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Prof. Oluseyi Akinloye, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the workshop would help to disseminate information that would drive not only Nigerians, but other countries to understand the basis of anything that has to do with biotechnology. The Vice-Chancellor said FUNAAB has been in the forefront among other institutions in Nigeria and that it had trained Nigerians and others. He said the workshop was meant for future generations, as he encouraged participants to pay close attention and generate great ideas.
The Director, Biotechnology Centre, Prof. Akinola Popoola reiterated that the real angle of focus for the workshop was on the training of crop scientists that are comfortable with the use of biotechnology in form of basic molecular biology. Prof. Popoola said the centre was currently carrying out capacity development for a crop of scientists that are familiar with the tools of molecular biology that could be applied to researches or other ventures like bio-environment, bio-health, bio-safety and bio-engineering, among many others.
“If these participants have the knowledge of basic molecular biology, they can diversify, whether they are in animal science, plant science, or aquaculture. The knowledge is very important as the participants are from diverse backgrounds of study.” Prof. Popoola assured that the centre would not relent in its efforts at rendering services to researchers from within and outside the University, while the biotechnology and analytical laboratory would continue to service analysis for minerals and heavy metals, analysis of proximate content like carbohydrate and protein while also running samples of genetic analysis for animals, plants and microbials.
