The University’s students on Agriculture based course due for the Farm Practical Year (FPY) for the 2018/2019 Academic Year have been orientated on the basics of what to do during their FPY programme by the Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS).
Addressing the students at the orientation, the Area Manager Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Ogun State, Mrs. Funmi Coker charged the FPY bound students to be themselves in the process of carrying out their FPY, and especially, in the filling of their log-books.
While delivering her speech titled; “Understanding the Log book”, Mrs. Coker advised the students not to be involved in any act of impersonation. She urged them to submit accurate information to the Industrial Training Fund in order to be able to claim their allowances from ITF.
She said any wrong or fake information from the students may prevent them from getting the allowances and also tasked them to be good representatives of the University and their family.
“Be good ambassadors of your institution and your parents. Exhibit good citizenship behavior while on attachment and always”, she stressed.
Addressing the students on the topic titled, “FUNAAB Ambassadors, Staying Away from Social Vices”, the Dean Student Affairs of the University, Professor Babatunde Idowu called on the students to do away with hard drugs and be satisfied with what they have.
Professor Idowu said, “Do away with hard drugs and be contented with what you have. I want to tell you that hard work does not kill”, he implored the students to attract opportunities to the University through their good characters.
The Director, COBFAS, Professor Sunday Adigbo on his part, charged the students to use the opportunity of the FPY to gain more practical experiences and be good ambassadors of the University. He urged them not to abscond from their various Centres and told them that the programme will introduce them to entrepreneurial skills if they are truly dedicated to the programme.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, Professor Lateef Sanni represented by the Director, Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC), Professor (Mrs.) Dorcas Adegbite noted that Rural Community-Driven Agricultural Development initiatives are often seen as a process targeted at poverty reduction through continuous generation as well as efficient allocation and use of local resources; for achieving greater socially-satisfying needs.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development confirmed that the issue of manpower development is considered paramount by the FUNAAB Management by paying keen attention to the training of human resources.
According to the DVC (D) “The issue of manpower development is therefore considered important by the University Management because of its focus on training human resources; (students); that are needed for the development of the centre, the University and indeed the nation at large”.
Prof. Sanni said that the University, through COBFAS, has successfully made efforts to ensure wide acceptability and proper integration of students into the existing farming systems, community life and culture in various COBFAS locations.
He said that the University has also continued to balance the execution of its mandate through COBFAS in such a way that it forges and fosters stronger linkages between the University and some communities within its catchment areas.
These communities according to him are; Isaga Orile in Abeokuta North Local Government Area; Iwoye-Ketu in Imeko Afo Local Government Area; Odogbolu in Odogbolu Local Government Area and Ode-Lemo in Remo Local Government Area all in Ogun State.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, confirmed that FPY orientation programme was organized at appropriate time to strengthen the capacities and proficiencies of all students in the real life interaction and technical/specialized activities in the communities.
