The College of Computing Sciences (COLCOMPS), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has taken a bold step towards advancing academic excellence and technological development with the hosting of its maiden lecture series today, April 1, 2026. The event, held at Auditorium III of the College, centred on strategies for accelerating academic growth and innovation in computing education.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu, described the lecture as a historic milestone in promoting innovation and strengthening academic excellence within the University. He highlighted the University’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of knowledge creation, technological advancement, and societal transformation.

The Vice-Chancellor further noted that the lecture series provides a platform for intellectual engagement and policy direction, encouraging stakeholders to rethink existing frameworks, refine methodologies, and reposition the College for greater impact through visionary leadership, cutting-edge research, industry partnerships, talent development, and improved digital infrastructure. He commended the leadership of the College for the initiative and reaffirmed Management’s support towards positioning COLCOMPS as a globally competitive centre of excellence. He also urged students to embrace innovation and see themselves as future leaders in the digital economy.

Delivering the keynote lecture titled “A Strategic Framework for Accelerating Academic Growth and Innovation: A Case of the College of Computing Sciences,” the Director, Directorate of Academic Information System (DACIS), Prof. Olusegun Folorunso, stressed the need to produce industry-ready graduates equipped with advanced technical knowledge, innovative thinking, and entrepreneurial skills.
He noted the importance of stronger collaboration among academia, industry, and society, stating that computing plays a central role in modern life, from digital transactions to governance systems and the expanding digital economy. He added that computing education must align with the evolving needs of businesses, government institutions, healthcare organisations, and educational systems.

Prof. Folorunso further highlighted the rising global demand for expertise in data science and analytics, noting that data-driven decision-making has become a key competitive advantage in today’s economy. He emphasised the need to align computing education with global best practices and regulatory standards, particularly those of the National Universities Commission (NUC), through relevant curricula, faculty development, industry collaboration, and robust digital infrastructure.

Outlining a strategic roadmap for the College, he identified key pillars for driving growth and innovation, while advocating for practical, problem-solving approaches to learning. He encouraged students to apply computing knowledge to real-world challenges in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and community development, and to transform academic ideas into viable entrepreneurial ventures.

Earlier, the College Dean, Prof. Oluwasefunmi Arogundade, described the lecture as a landmark initiative in the history of COLCOMPS. She noted that the College, established in 2025, was created in response to the growing demands of the digital age. She emphasised that computing has become a critical driver of development across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, governance, education, and industry, particularly with the rapid evolution of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence.
