The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has been commended for having zero tolerance for Drug Abuse among its students and youths in general.
This commendation was given by the representative of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Ikairan Ekpo at the 2018/2019 orientation programme for new intakes by the University.
In a paper titled, “Drug Abuse, and how students can avoid being hired into substances Abuse”, Mrs. Ekpo noted that the South-West Region of the country, in general and Ogun State in particular recorded the largest number of Drug Cases due to its boarder access and its large number of higher institutions.
She urged the new students to be weary of the friends they move with, especially the ones that could lure them into drug use.
Sounding a note of warning, Mrs. Ekpo said that any medication not prescribed by medical experts is an abuse of drug, while over-dose of those prescribed is also an abuse.
She further warned that illicit drug/trafficking is a serious offence which attracts fifteen years imprisonment.
Corroborating her, the representative of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Dr. Peter Onifade buttressed further with his lecture titled “Effects of Substance Abuse on Academic Achievement”.
According to him, regular use or addiction to a particular substance can lead to mental ill-health.
He urged the students not to partake in the use of any substance and advised those who had been involved in drug abuse before to drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic drinks.
In a similar development at the orientation programme, a representative of the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS), Ogun State Division, Mr. Adeola Awodeyi likened cyber criminals to terrorists.
Mr. Awodeyi said this while speaking to the fresh students stating that “cybercriminals are like terrorists or mental thieves in that their activities impose disproportionate cost on the society and individuals.
He charged students not to partake in cyber criminal activities because it is a serious offence in our society, restating that the consequence may lead to imprisonment and other severe penalties.
He cited punishment awaiting anybody that gets involves in manipulation of ATM/POS Terminals, to include payment of N500,000.00 fine or five years imprisonment or both.
Also speaking, the Chief Security Officer of the University, Mr. Peter Bolarinwa admonished fresh students to dress decently because, FUNAAB, has zero tolerance for indecent dressing.
He restated that if the students notice any suspicious move they should call on the security personnel around them.
Earlier, the Registrar of the University, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola told the students that the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta was established in 1988 to foster learning and research in agriculture.
The Registrar took time to explain the University’s organogram to the students, where he gave the structure and function of every stakeholder from the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council the Vice-Chancellor and his deputies to the Registrar, Bursar and University Librarian.
He also tasked the students to be familiar with the acronyms used for the ten colleges on campus.
