The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako has stressed the need to increase agricultural productivity in order to alleviate hunger in the face of global economic recession.
The call was made by the Vice-Chancellor at the 20th Annual Convention and 19th Annual Lecture Series of FUNAAB Alumni Association.
According to Professor Salako, recession is a business cycle contraction that brings about a general slowdown in economic activities. He noted that recession is characterized by decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment, reduced investment spending and capacity utilization, decreased household and business income as well as inflation, adding that this could be as a result of internal and external factors.
He stated that agriculture stands to play a vital role as solution to economic recession. Professor Salako buttressed his point by emphasizing that, “Agriculture is the single largest employer of labour in the world, providing livelihood for 40 percent of today’s global population”.
Earlier in his Keynote Remark, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, University Governing Council, Dr. (Barr.) Aboki Zhawa thanked the Alumni for their contributions to the development of the institution, especially with the floating of the Alumni Trust Fund.
The Pro-Chancellor disclosed that FUNAAB was going into practical agriculture, especially with the 40 hectres Council Demonstration Farm being put in place and the recent acquisition of block moulding machine which will assist in the area of wealth creation.
In his Address, the National President, FUNAAB Alumni Association, Mr. Olusola Tobun stated that FUNAAB Alumni Association had grown globally in her search for knowledge, greener pastures, breaking of new grounds and making a difference universally.
Mr. Tobun said that FUNAAB Alumni Trust Fund will raise funds to support further development of the University, assuring that the Alumni body is set to key into the University Commercial Farm Project as soon as the company is incorporated.
The highpoint of the day was the investiture of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egba-land as the Patron of the Association.
Responding, Oba Gbadebo described Alumni as ambassadors of the University, charging them to bond as one, in order to take the university to greater heights.
