FUNAAB BIOTECHNOLOGY CENTRE RECORDS GIANT STRIDES FOLLOWING NOMINATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

The Biotechnology Centre, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has been recording giant strides and positive developments since the inception of the Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde-led Administration.

This was disclosed by the Director of the Centre, Prof Olufunke Bolatito Shittu in her Welcome Address at the Fermentation Microbiome and Food Safety Workshop.

The Workshop was facilitated by a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow, Prof. Folarin Oguntoyinbo from North Carolina, United States of America and had participants drawn from scholars in the field of Molecular Biology.

The Director disclosed that FUNAAB Biotechnology Centre earned international recognition since it was meritoriously chosen as one of the institutions to nominate representative on the National Mirror Committee/Nigerian National Technical Committee on Biotechnology holding at the African Regional Organisation (ARO), Kenya, as well as the International Organization for Standardization (IOS) Office, Geneva, Switzerland.

According to her, the University has nominated one of its Research Fellows, Dr. Olufemi Oyelakin, a Plant Biotechnologist, to represent the University in the global event.

Prof. Shittu commended the Vice-Chancellor for his deep and special interest in the Biotechnology Centre, which has been demonstrated by concerted efforts thereby leading to a great turn around and revamping of the Centre with new equipment.

While declaring the Workshop open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde applauded the positive initiatives embarked upon by the Biotechnology Centre, saying it is living up to the continuation of the mandate of FUNAAB.

Prof Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof C. O .N Ikeobi, said the Workshop would enhance capacity building of staff and students, remarking that lecturers and researchers should be pulled from different Universities and Research Institutes to impact knowledge that develops.

The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the laudable efforts of the visiting Prof. Folarin Oguntoyinbo for the initiatives to give back to the society, just as he also commended the erstwhile Director, Biotechnology Centre, Prof. Olusegun Obadina for facilitating the Workshop for the benefit of the University.

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow, Prof. Oguntoyinbo thanked the Vice-Chancellor for providing facilities for the CAD Fellow while charging participants to take advantage of the opportunity to grow and learn.
