Forty-Three new Veterinary Doctors were recently inducted during the Induction Ceremony and Admission of Graduates in the College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) into the Veterinary profession.

Speaking at the occasion, the Guest Speaker, a Veterinarian and a Musical Guru popularly known as Beautiful Nubia, Dr. Segun Akinlolu who spoke on the theme, “The Cosmopolitan Veterinarian” described a Veterinary Doctor as one who must learn to be comfortable wherever he finds himself, adding that what you do after school is what makes you a Veterinary Doctor and not just graduating from the College.

According to Dr. Akinlolu, a Cosmopolitan Veterinarian’s mind and thinking had to be broad so that when they come across unforeseen circumstances, they will be able to handle it and overcome.

He added that a Veterinary Doctor must take note of the following two important rules in life; which are; you cannot be happy if a neighbour is not at peace and you are only as rich as the poorest person in your society, saying that your riches must make impact on the society, if not, such is a failure.

Giving his Keynote Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako stated that FUNAAB Veterinary graduates are one of the best in Nigeria, noting that the University does not only train the Veterinarian but go extra mile to build them. He added that the University had always worked hard to improve on learning and training facilities in COLVET, in order to maintain high standard and excellence, so that our Veterinarian can compete favourably with their counterparts within and outside the country.

The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programme in FUNAAB has enjoyed full accreditation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) since 2009. Our (DVM) programme was also fully accredited by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria in 2014 for a period of five years. According to him, “We are therefore proud to release into the society another batch of well-trained Forty-Three (43) Veterinary Doctors who will help to boost livestock production and National Food Security through efficient prevention and control of disease of food animals.

The President, Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Hon. Dr. Godwin Ejikeme Abonyi who expressed his appreciation to the University reminded the Inductees that the key factor of their admission is to uphold the ethics of the Association, adding that the primary objective is to use the knowledge gained for the benefit of the society. He urged them to be handworking professionals, strong and role playing members of the Association and not back benchers. Dr. Abonyi was represented by the National Vice-President (NVMA) Dr. Teddy Essien

The Acting Registrar, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Dr. Josiah Kantiyok commended the Vice-Chancellor and members of staff of COLVET, saying that the College has what it takes to bring out graduates that can compete with other Veterinary Doctors all over the world.

The Acting Registrar stated that the Certificate being given to the Inductees today is a one year provisional Certificate after which they will be issued the permanent Certificate with numbers, when they visit the Council. He implored the Inductees to continue to educate themselves by regularly attending Seminars, Conferences and Workshops.

Earlier, the Dean of the College, Professor Adebayo Akinloye appreciated the University Management for providing an enabling environment for the College, charging the Inductees to be dedicated, focused and committed, adding that a good Veterinary Doctor must have keen interest in animals to enable them treat them well. According to him, when you treat the animal, you are at the same time treating its owner.

Highlights of the Induction is the Oath-taking ceremony by the Inductees, presentation of awards to those who have distinguished themselves in Veterinary Medicine and exceptional students including the Best Graduating student, Dr. Jarra Essa with Cumulative Grade Points Average of 4.63.
