FUNAAB VC Charges Youths on Social Media Discipline

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof. Kolawole Salako has charged youths in Secondary Schools to be disciplined on how and what they engage themselves with while exploring the social media.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Clement Adeofun gave this charge while speaking at the 9th Annual Career Talk, organised by FUNAAB Alumni Association, Abeokuta branch of the University for Final Year students in Secondary Schools in Abeokuta.

Addressing the students on the theme of the Career Talk, “Social Media Discipline: Pathway to a Successful Career”, Prof. Salako said if checks are not put in place, with the rate at which young ones are misusing social media, most of them may lose focus on their academic pursuit and as such jeopardize their dreams.

According to him, “Abuse of the social media by the youths and children today calls for concern. Abuse of anything is bad, so is the abuse of social media. For youths that want to attain great heights in life, you must ensure you are disciplined in the use of social media, else you would be distracted and not be able to go far.”

He urged them to be determined and be courageous saying that their background or the limitations they have is not a barrier to excelling in life if they work hard.

            Prof. Salako further restated that it is important for young minds to begin to think, plan and prepare for what they desire to be in the future.

            He appreciated the organisers of the event for choosing the most relevant topic as the theme of this year’s Career Talk.

            Earlier in his Address, the Chairman, FUNAAB Alumni Association, Abeokuta branch, Mr. Alaba Ogunleye said  the Career Talk is a yearly event, noting that it helps to give back to the society while it assists final year secondary school students to be focused and determined in their chosen career.

            Delivering a lecture titled, “Subject Combination at WAEC and JAMB” Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Mobolaji Omemu stressed the need for students to know the subjects combination for their courses of choices by JAMB and the institutions they want to attend.

            She advised them not to look down on themselves because their friends are admitted into studying a particular course. Rather, she urged them that all courses are good as their determination and focus will take them far beyond their imagination.

            Also speaking, the University Counselor, Dr. (Mrs.) Modesta Ofodile educated the students on the “Pros and Cons of Social Media And How Its Positive Use Can Help Students To Be Successful In Their Career”.

            Dr. Ofodile disclosed that social media can assist them to connect with achievers of their chosen career who can mentor them to become greater in life.

            She admonished students to utilise the advantage of social media to search for positive opportunities in their careers instead of looking for social vices.
