FUNAABSU Organises Literary Week

In a bid to revive reading culture among Nigerian youths and particularly students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, the (FUNAAB) Student Union Executive organized a Literary Week.

The Literary Week themed, ‘The Reawakening’ featured events such as Library/Awareness/Scavenger hunt, Reading Culture, Spelling Bee, Inter Collegiate and Inter-Varsity Debate Competition.

According to the General Secretary, FUNAAB Student Union, Comrade Oluwamayowa Owoo, the programme was strategically organized at a time when students were just resuming for the Session because the Seminar will help the students to imbibe the reading culture early, adding that it will also ensure that students are well- versed in the best method to read for their exams as well as deter them from cramming.

Speaking on the importance of the Library Scavenger Hunt Task, the General Secretary of FUNAAB Student Union, Comrade Owoo said “so many people don’t know that we have past question bank in the library, or newspapers, so we enlighten people that there are other things you can get from the library like journals, social book and all”.

Explaining the rule of the game, the General Secretary said, “In the library scavenger hunt competition, things were kept at specific locations and with their knowledge about the library, they were able to fetch those items, solve the riddles and puzzles and winners were duly rewarded.”.

Ukwandi Vincent Bobby, an Electrical Electronics student of the University emerged the overall winner of the Spelling Bee Competition, bagging a cash prize of Fifteen Thousand Naira. A student from College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) emerged as the overall winner of the Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition and won a cash prize of Thirty Thousand Naira while the winner of the Inter-Varsity Debate competition was a student from Adekunle Ajasin University who won a cash prize of Fifty Thousand Naira only.

Comrade Owoo also disclosed that the Inter varsity debate topics titled, ‘Legislating Drug Use: The One Sustainable Way to Curb Drug Use’ and ‘Should The Nigerian Government Continue to Prioritize Anti-Corruption War’ were strategically chosen to reflect the challenges faced by the youths in Nigeria.

According to him, students from different Universities across Nigeria such as Nnamdi Azikwe University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta and Adekunle Ajasin University participated in the Debate.

The General Secretary commended the University management for their support towards the successful hosting of the programme while assuring that as ambassadors of the University, they will continue to keep the flag of the University flying.
