The Head, Department of Statistics, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) of the University, Dr. Olaniyi Olayiwola has called for the involvement of statisticians in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Nigeria. Speaking at an event organized by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), Nigeria Local Group, Dr. Olayiwola, who doubles as chairman of the group, exposed the participants to the “Modelling of COVID-19 Pandemic in Nigeria”.
While explaining the application of his newly-proposed model to participants, he stated that the new model would be useful in determining the total number of COVID-19 carriers in Nigeria, adding that the involvement of statisticians by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for the tracing of carriers of the deadly virus would go a long way in recording maximum success in the fight against the pandemic. Dr. Olayiwola also identified the reproduction rate of COVID-19 and the roles of NCDC in contact-tracing. Present at the event were the Acting Rector, Lagos State Polytechnic, Mr. Olumide Metillelu; and Chairman, Public and Inaugural Lecture Committee of the polytechnic, Dr. Olatunji Arowolo, among others.
