Dear Content Contributor,

Now that FUNAAB Radio has been licensed to operate, there is the need for us on campus to make use of this great opportunity to enhance our learning and teaching. Some may be asking, what is the usefulness of this development to our classroom experience? What is the relationship between the mass media and teaching in FUNAAB?

The mass media are diversified media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience through mass communication. The technology through which this communication takes place varies. Broadcast media such as radio, recorded music, film and televisiontransmit their information electronically.

Media can be a component of active learning strategies such as group discussions or case studies. Media could be a film clip, a song you hear on the radio, podcast of a lecture or newspaper article. Students can also create their own media. For example, students’ video projects can be a powerful learning experience.

Media – like all other teaching techniques – should be used judiciously in the learning process. Media can be used to motivate discussions. However, there are a number of important considerations for faculty before they can integrate the media or ask their students to use or develop media in their courses. This section explores tips for effective use of the media by noting a number of common mistakes to avoid. It also describes how to involve students in creating media platforms. The dramatic growth of social media creates new opportunities for engaging students. These include social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter alongside blogs and wikis. We shall share with  the FUNAAB community on the usage and importance of social media as a facilitator of active learning strategy in our subsequent editions.

Most importantly, we all need to key into this platform to deploy our lecture materials and maximize the usage of investment in the areas of lecture recording, webcasting, information dissemination and other facilities.
