In a bid to promote cultural heritage and historical values, the National Association of Delta Students (NADESTU) of FUNAAB, held the Delta Day Celebration with the theme, “Sustaining Cultural Norms and Historical Values”. The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Edward Tuoyo encouraged the students to learn to embrace their culture, irrespective of where they come from. Mr. Tuoyo, who also doubles as of the one of the Staff Adviser of NADESTU, admonished them to value their native language, stressing that they have a rich cultural heritage. According to him, “value what you have from your native language, to your dialect. Do not see your mother tongue as inferior, but see the uniqueness of your culture because no particular culture or language is superior to the other”.
The President of the association, Comrade Imonieroh Oghenetega, stated that NADESTU was available in almost all Nigerian institutions with the aim of bringing Delta indigenes together to promote their cultural heritage and provide support for members. She added that one of the benefits being enjoyed by his members was the massive support of the Delta State Government through the payment of general bursary allowance to all students of the state while appreciating members of NADETSU and their staff advisers for their immense support. Present at the event was the representative of the National President, Comrade Godwin Unity from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, and Comrade Rowland Iyeh of FUNAAB, who conducted the traditional ‘breaking of kolanuts’.
Certificate of office was presented to the Grand Patron of the association, Prof. Chryss Onwuka of FUNAAB, who was represented by his spouse; the Head, Public Relations of FUNAAB, Dr. (Mrs.) Linda Onwuka. Reacting to the award, Dr. (Mrs.) Onwuka, a Matron of the association thanked the members of the NADESTU for the award and called on them to take the their academics seriously. At the event, there was cultural display by the NADETSU cultural group; presentation of awards of excellence to the President, Comrade Oghenetega, and Vice-President, Comrade Ogbue Andrew; while a 100-level student of the Department of Pure and Applied Zoology, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Miss Joy Obuseh, was crowned as Miss NADESTU.
