Ogun State Police Commissioner, CP Bashir Dabup Makama has commended the University’s Management for instilling sound moral values in her teeming students, disclosing that none of them has ever been arrested or paraded for cultism by the Command.
CP Makama gave FUNAAB Students clean bill even as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako declared that few of the people attempting to dent the good image of the University are not students of the institution but outsiders.
This was the climax of exchange of views when Professor Salako led his Management team on a Courtesy Visit to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Makama and the Director, Department of State Security Service (DSS), Ogun State Headquarters, Mr. David Tuska.
Receiving FUNAAB Management team, CP. Makama commended the Vice-Chancellor – led Principal Officers for inculcating discipline in the students, revealing that though the Command has made various arrests of youths involved in cultism across tertiary institutions in the state, at no time have FUNAAB Students been found among those arrested.
He stated that FUNAAB’s culture of zero tolerance for cultism is highly commendable and exemplary because cultism in the State has been on the rise, describing the scourge as “biting and a serious problem”.
Mr. Makama lauded the University Management for the visit which he said will allow cross fertilization of ideas.
Speaking further, the CP described the relationship between the University and the Command as wonderful even as he appreciated the institution for her support so far, especially during the recent general election.
Speaking earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Salako described FUNAAB students as cool headed and law abiding, pointing out that investigations revealed and established that the disgruntled elements that attempted to dent the good image of the University with their misconducts are not FUNAAB Students but bad eggs who are hiding off campus.
Speaking on Cultism, Professor Salako re-emphasized that FUNAAB has carved a niche as a University that has zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse and other social vices reiterating that his Administration has sustained and promised never to give a breeding ground for such miscreants.
The Vice-Chancellor also explained the effort made so far by the University in reaching out to the various landlords and caretakers off-campus, but unfortunately majority of them are absentee landlords.
According to Professor Salako, “We found out that some of the landlords are absentee landlords, they just built their houses, collect rents and disappear, not minding the welfare of those they rented their apartments to”.
It would be recalled that Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi while serving as the Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command adjudged FUNAAB as the most peaceful University in the State with zero tolerance for cultism and public disturbance.
In the same vein, the Director, DSS, Ogun State Command, Mr. David Tuska while welcoming the Vice-Chancellor and his entourage, appreciated the University and its leadership for its competence in handling matters of sensitive issues.
Corroborating the Commissioner of Police on cultism, Mr. Tuska noted that cultism is now rampant in Ogun State, disclosing that the campaign against it is ongoing. He said that the Command is always ready to help and assist in making sure the University succeeds in all areas where their services are needed.
He stressed that the University is a small community and it is their duty to keep monitoring the institution.
He posited that “Communication is key” advising that students living off-campus should have a way of communicating with the Management, while the University on its part should organise sensitization programme for staff on ethics from time-to-time and reach out to the students through the Student Union President and the Dean, Student Affairs on how students should moderate themselves.
Mr. Tuska described the relationship between the Command and FUNAAB as robust, noting that by the nature of their job, they have been following development in the University in their own way.
The visit, which aimed at ensuring better and robust relationship between the University and the security agencies was highly welcomed by the heads of the two security outfits who, welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and his team with open arm.
Mr. Tuska said that in order to serve the State better, the Command runs a 24-Hour/ 7Days operation, with the interest of the people first before others.
The visit was climaxed with the presentation of the University mementos to the security helmsmen and a commemorative plaque from the Police Commissioner to the Vice-Chancellor.
