The test run of the 3MW Hybrid Solar Power at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is progressing steadily, ensuring the campus benefits from a sustainable and uninterrupted power supply.

Designed to operate entirely on solar energy during the day, the system transitions at night based on battery storage capacity and priority load distribution. With a 2MW battery storage limit, only critical load centres—including student hostels, the Health Centre, the Guest House, the Executive Lodges, and select essential facilities—would remain powered by solar energy after sunset.

To maintain a seamless electricity supply to the rest of the campus, a newly constructed 33/11kV, 34km dedicated transmission line now directly links FUNAAB to the town’s Transmission Switch Yard and it’s about 98% completed. As this line is exclusively dedicated to the University, it would enhance reliability and efficiency.

Under this hybrid system:
👉 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: All areas of the campus run on solar power.
👉 6:00 p.m. onwards: Critical areas remain on solar power (subject to battery storage), while non-critical areas switch to the public grid.
