The FUNAAB Poultry breeding Project started in 1994 with collection of 500birds all over South Western Nigeria comprising Normal feathered, Frizzle feathered and Naked Neck indigenous birds.

The characterization methods include collection of biometric data and genetic screening for survival, reproductive performance and elimination of broodiness.

With 10 generations of selection that had involved several Undergraduate and Post graduate students, broodiness had been reduced to less than 2% of the population.

Egg production has increased from 60 per annum to 240-260 .

Fertility and hatchability had increased from Peters 2002: 30-40 % to 2014 65-75%

Average rearing mortality ranges from 5-10% .

Pullet Body weight at maturity increased from 0.9-1.3kg to 1.2-1.8kg.

Average age at first egg 18 to 21 weeks.

Average weight of first egg increased from 39-42g to 45-55g.

Cross breeding within the last decade to generate the Indigenous broiler lines has added value to the body weight from 1.2kg at 10 weeks to 1.6-1.9kg for dihybrid crosses.

Current trihybrid comprises 2 exotic and one indigenous line to generate 25-37.5% Indigenous blood.

The current weight at 8 weeks ranged from 1.5-1.9kg.although with a corresponding increase in age at first egg to 24-26weeks in the trihybrids.

These are being developed as the Parent stock line for the production of Commercial FUNAAB Indigenous broilers (COFI-Broilers).

Currently available FUNAAB lines are as follows:

Indigenous Birds (FInbirds) Normal, Frizzle and Naked Neck.

White Arbor Acre,

White Marshall.

Spotted GPS (FUN-alpha).

Partially Spotted PS (FUN-white).

FUNAAB Commercial hybrids (COFI-broiler).

Value addition (FUNAAB Roasted chicken)
