Abstract

Degradation of Nigeria’s rainforests has continued as a result of various human causes.  (Ola-Adams and Iyamabo 1977) and recently conversion of rainforests for artificial forest plantations and for food production (has been accelerated to respond to shortfalls in the Nations food deficit as population growth continues.

Nigerian’s rainforests lie to the south of the country (fig. 1) with this major natural resources presently being in various stages of degradation (FAO 1981).  It is now common to refer to three types of forests depending on their level of degradation namely undisturbed, disturbed (degraded) and severely degraded forest (EPHTA/IITA – FAO; 1998).
