In a remarkable gesture of academic generosity and enduring loyalty to the University, Prof. Olufiropo Samson Awokola has donated a collection of valuable books and journals to the Nimbe Adedipe Library.
The presentation ceremony, hosted today, November 5, 2025, in the Library and anchored by the Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering (COLENG), reflected Prof. Awokola’s deep appreciation for the institution that shaped his career.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Olawale Dairo, expressed profound gratitude to Prof. Awokola for his “kind heart” and exemplary act of generosity. He noted that while many Academics aspire to give back to their institutions, only a few have the opportunity to actualise it.
Commending the University Librarian for his dedication to improving the University’s knowledge resources, the Vice-Chancellor lauded the collective efforts of the Management in strengthening the Library’s standing as a hub of learning and research. He encouraged that the donated materials be made accessible to both internal and external researchers, praying for divine blessings on the donor’s health and continued success.

In her remarks, the Acting Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Funmilayo Alayaki, described Prof. Awokola as a “father figure, retired but not tired,” noting his pioneering role as the Department’s first Acting Head from 2004 to 2010. She praised his thoughtful decision to entrust the materials to the University Library, describing it as a legacy that would continue to inspire generations of students and scholars.
In his response, Prof. Awokola, FUNAAB’s first PhD holder from the College of Engineering and a full Professor since 2014, expressed gratitude to the University Management for warmly accepting the donation. He paid glowing tribute to the late Prof. Lekan Oyebande, Emeritus Professor of Geography and Hydrology, University of Lagos, whose mentorship connected him to the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and led to the grant that facilitated the acquisition of the materials.

“This donation represents my modest contribution to the vibrant FUNAAB Community,” Prof. Awokola remarked.
In his appreciation, the University Librarian, Prof. Abayomi Owolabi, described the event as “a celebration of knowledge, a reaffirmation of our intellectual heritage, and a testament to the noble spirit of true scholars and patriots.”
He noted that beyond its monetary value, running into millions of naira, the donation symbolised a “beacon of hope” and a powerful reminder of the importance of giving back. According to him, the resources would enhance the University’s academic foundation, conserve financial resources, expand research opportunities, and promote a culture of philanthropy and mentorship.

“Through this singular act, Prof. Awokola has not only invested in the future of scholarship but erected a monument to intellectual patriotism.”
