Prof. Martha N. Bemji serves as a Professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. She is an adviser of 80 students cutting across 100 – 500 levels and lectures three undergraduate courses‚ namely: Principles of Genetics (ABG 301), Quantitative Heredity in Animal Breeding (ABG 304)‚ Animal Behaviour and Welfare (ABG 503) and three postgraduate courses: Population Genetics (ABG 805), Developmental Genetics (ABG 810) and Poultry Genetic Resources (ABG 701). She is involved in research and supervision of students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In administrative capacity‚ a Senate member‚ College Representative at Student Industrial Work Scheme Committee and also a Postgraduate School Representative at Examination Panels from time to time.
Prof. Bemji holds the FUNAAB Ph.D degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics‚ M.Sc. (Animal Science) and Bachelor of Agriculture from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. She also has Diploma and certificates from short term courses in Computer programming, Recombinant DNA and Polymerase chain reaction techniques, respectively.
Earlier in her career, she held management positions at FUNAAB among which were Coordinator, Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics (2007-2009), Deputy Dean and Coordinator of postgraduate programmes in College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (2010 – 2012); Chaired several committees and served as member in several College/University committees and has over the years obtained eight (8) commendation letters from various authorities in recognition of her meritorious service.
During the last 15 years at FUNAAB, she has supervised several research projects mostly on small ruminant genetics and improvement, graduating over 88 undergraduate and 8 Masters students as major supervisor, 11 Masters and 2 PhD students as minor supervisor while supervision of 10 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate students is on-going. She has served as External Examiner of one PhD Thesis.
Prof. Bemji has over 53 published research articles (33 journal papers and 20 refereed conference proceedings) in both local and international journals and has served as a reviewer for several highly reputable local and international journals. She is a Registered Animal Scientist with the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science and a member of several professional Organizations: International Goat Association (IGA), International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) and Life Member of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP).
