PROF. PETER ADEBOLA OKUNEYE: HOME CALL

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Salako on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Staff and Students of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta regrets to announce the untimely death of Professor Peter Adebola Okuneye, whose death occurred on Monday 8th June, 2020.

              Professor Peter Adebola OKUNEYE was born on the 23rd day of December, 1953 in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State. A world renowned and erudite scholar in Agricultural and Environmental Economics who blended theory with practical issues in examining and solving problems of social, economic and environmental dimensions.

His research, teaching, extension and consultancy experience spanned various great institutions including the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, NISER (1976–1986); University of Lagos, Abeokuta Campus, (1986 – 1988); Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) 1988 until his death.

As an academic and a Professor of repute, Professor Okuneye’s major areas of contribution included Curriculum Development at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels; Capacity Building at the formal and informal sectors.

With experience spanning over 40 years of teaching and research, Professor Okuneye taught over 10, 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, wrote over 100 publications in learned Journals, Books, Monographs, Refereed Proceedings and Conferences including his highly celebrated Inaugural lecture, “Nigerian Agriculture on the Run: Refuses to move.” The second Inaugural Lecture Series of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, presented on 24th May 1995. While at the public level he served in many positions, held many posts either as chairman or member and won several honors, which included, African Country Representative: International Farm Management Association; National President and Fellow, Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (2011 – until his death); Fellow, Farm Management Association of Nigeria: 2004 (FFAMAN); National President, Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN) 2000-2004; National Vice-President, Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE): 2007 to 2011 and Resource Consultant,to the United Nations IDEP, Dakar, Senegal, 2001.

Professor ‘Bola Okuneye, was a one time Head, Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, University of Ilorin (1991 – 1992), Dean, College of Agricultural Management, Rural Development and Consumer Studies, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) from January 1993 to July 2000, Director, Agricultural Media and Resources Centre (1996 –1997), Chairman Committee of Deans and Directors (CODAD), UNAAB, (1998-2000), and the Managing Director, UNAAB Consult Ltd (2006 – 2009).

He was married to Pastor (Mrs.) Mojoyin Yinka Okuneye (nee Dayo) and the marriage is blessed with children and grand-children.
