Abstract
Using some standard laboratory methods of breaking doffilancy, studies were carried out to find the treatments necessary for terminating dormancy in seeds of three tropical tree species,
Albizia odoratissima, Milletia thoningii and Enterlobium cyclocarpum Reuses of the treated seeds to gibberellic acid (GAl), Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP) and Coconut milk. Source of Cytokinin – like substances during germination was also investigated. Seeds of the three the species were found to have mechanical dormancy due to hard seed coats. Treatments with conc. Also was the most effective in breaking seed qormancy in the tree species than absolute ethanol and boiling water. Boiling water treatment for 13 – 15 minutes induced germination in seeds of Ecyclocarpum. Soaking seeds in absolute ethanol and surphuric acid for 10 – 15 minutes terminated dormancy in Ecyclocarpum_and to a lesser extent in M: Ihoningi!. Only seeds of Ecyclocarpum responded to treatment with coconut milk or BAP. Gibbereilic acid (GAl) highly enhanced germination in scarified seeds of the three the species.
