SIWES Holds Orientation for Non-Agricultural Students …Charges them to be Disciplined

The Directorate of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) has held an orientation for the students in the non-agricultural discipline who are going for their Industrial Training with a charge to be good ambassadors of the University wherever they are posted.

Addressing the students, the Director, SIWES, Professor Grace Sokoya disclosed that the orientation programme is one of the major mandates of the Directorate in the University, which has been operating as a link between FUNAAB, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the SIWES division of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Industries/Organizations where the students are to acquire relevant skills.

She said that the orientation served the purpose of exposing the students to the objectives of SIWES, as well as their roles and responsibilities as stakeholders in the Scheme.

Professor Sokoya noted that the orientation is being done in collaboration with the officials of ITF, Abeokuta Area office, expressing the hope that the students’ capacities will be further built to enable them cope with challenges that might confront them wherever they serve.

She appreciated the team from ITF, for finding time to come for the orientation, and to enlighten the students on their specific roles, during the IT period and how to complete their log-books.

The Acting Director, FUNAAB Health Services, Dr. Abiodun Amusan also enlightened the students on how to keep fit and maintain optimum health during SIWES year.

He gave the students some safety and health tips for keeping fit which includes, taking ones breakfast as at when due and regularly; he also tasked them to always be with their Identification Cards.

The students were charged to avoid bad company, alcohol and hard drugs that could ruin their lives, and avoid pre-marital sex.

The ITF Area Manager, Mrs. Funmi Coker on her part stressed that the need to provide an avenue for the students to acquire industrial skills and experiences in their courses of study was the major reason for the establishment of SIWES.

She admonished the students to exhibit good conduct at their posts of training by ensuring that they are well dressed, develop good communication and human relations, be obedient to organizations rules and regulations and be punctual at work.
