I have since 1991 been working in the field of Environmental Management. The accent of my research has been in Environmental Remote Sensing and Geographical System (GIS) applications in solving critical environmental problems. Most recently I participated in a United Nation’s Sponsored Workshop on the applications of Global Navigation Satellite Technologies in Sub-Saharan, Africa.
Some of the major environmental problems and challenges in Nigeria include deforestation, desertification, gully erosion/land degradation, poor urban planning, biodiversity loss and the problem of solid waste management especially in major cities. Solution to these problems has been the accent of my research over the past decade. I assessed deforestation in the lowland area of South Western Nigeria using remote sensing technique and I found that the average annual rate of deforestation in this region is 3.29%. I also determined the forest degradation pattern using multidate satellite data and its implication for forest regeneration in the region. I have also successfully identified and monitored deforestation factors and proffering options for its control and management.
The environment is facing potential threat from unsustainable waste disposal practices prevailing in our major urban centre. I have demonstrated the capability of remote sensing and GIS for the selection of the most suitable site for the solid waste landfill facility in Jos city. The study also formed the basis for environmental resources planning especially in site selection for public utilities in the states.
For any nation to develop the environmental resources must be well annexed and to achieve this, the location, quality and type of resources must be known. I have contributed significantly in using remotely sensed data and technology in
I have worked extensively on the improvement of Agricultural Production in Nigeria using the technique of satellite technology. I have developed a land suitability index for rice production in Benue state of Nigeria using remote sensing and GIS. The result derived has been of immense assistance to local farmers within the state. I have also identified potential lost crops of significance in order to achieve food security in the country.
I have participated in the study of predictive modeling of urinary Schistosomiasis and a preliminary study on temporal variation in biting activity of Simulium damnosum in Ogun state using remotely-sensed environmental data. The risk maps provided the state health official with information required for the delineation of the areas for intervention and the assessment of population at risk.
My contributions to knowledge in the area of land use/land cover changes and population dynamics as it affects environmental degradation has been of immense benefits in terms of providing quantitative and qualitative base line data for environmental management in Buruku, Ibadan, Jos and Abeokuta.
Lack of proper planning in our urban centers has led to several environmental problems and its attendant consequences such as erosion, flooding, etc. I have successfully applied remote sensing and GIS techniques to urban planning in Jos metropolis by assessing the rate of urban growth over time and in Abeokuta by assessing urban encroachment of Ogun river bank protection zone (RPZ). This study determines the stability of the Ogun RPZ since 1964, estimate the annual rate of intrusion and finally recommend to Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) a GIS-based solution that will aid in forestalling continued uncontrolled infringement.
Development activities/projects are the major factors in environmental pollution/degradation and hence the need to carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (E.I.A) before executing any development activity. The importance of E.I.A. in environmental management therefore cannot be over-emphasized. In recent years, I have focused my research on the Environmental Impact Assessment of major development activities using remote sensing and GIS methodologies. Specifically, I carried out E.I.A of sound dredging and land reclamation in some parts of Lagos, E.I.A of G.S.M base stations in Abeokuta and Environmental Sensitivity Impact Analysis (E.S.I.A) of petroleum products distribution through sub-surface pipelines in Lagos.
My major contributions to knowledge from these studies is the fact that I was able to predict impacts more accurately and more locations-specific.
My modest contribution to knowledge in the area of Human Health and Environmental risk Assessment include the identification of major weather-related respiratory diseases in humid forest and derived savanna eco-climatic zones of Nigeria; and the fact that variation in weather parameters and thermal indices influence the occurrence of malaria in Ondo state of Nigeria.
Water is life, so they say. I have carried out extensive studies on water resources availability, quality, sources and harvesting. I have used satellite data to monitor the sources of Lake Chard, and assess changes in its aerial extent. I have also carried out a hydro-geological characteristics and groundwater quality assessment in selected communities in Abeokuta and also rainwater harvesting assessment. The results from these studies have contributed significantly to overall water resources management for agricultural, industrial and domestic purpose in Nigeria and Abeokuta in particular.
I have contributed significantly to knowledge in the area of biodiversity/habitat mapping and ecosystem management. Using remote sensing and GIS, I assess the urban wildlife habitat potentiality of Mussorie Dehrandum, India and the study revealed that 68% of the total area shows a high degree of habitat potentiality. Also with the aid of satellite data, I assessed the rate of wetland ecosystem loss in Lagos coastal area and found out that the rate of loss is 1.8% which by implication means that the wetland in the area will go into extinction in the next fifty years. I have also assessed human perturbation of the Nigerian terrestrial ecosystem using GIS and remote sensing techniques. The study revealed that 0.94% of the country’s landmass is undistributed and the calculated habitat index of 3.94 indicated a high dominance of man in Nigerian ecosystems which could be consequential to the environment.
I have worked on the predictive modeling for desertification early warning in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, using remote sensing and GIS approach. The significance of this study to national development attracted the support and funding from the national Space Research and Development Agency
