Short Profile

Prof. Oluwasanmi Moses Arigbede was born on 14th August, 1964 at Ipetu Ijesha in Ori Ade Local Government, Osun State. He attended St. Paul’s primary School, Ipetu Ijesha between September 1970 and June 1975 and later, Ibokun Grammar School, Ibokun, Osun State between September 1975 to June 1980 for his secondary education. He later proceeded to Government Teachers’ College, Ilesha in September 1980 and completed this in June, 1981. He taught for a while at Irepodun High School, Erin-Oke, Osun state before he gained admission into the University of Ibadan in September 1983.

He obtained a B.Sc. degree in Animal Science in June 1988 with second class upper (21) division in June 1988 and immediately went for National youth service (NYSC) at the International Tanners Limited, Sharada Industrial Phase 1. Kano till August 1989. He embarked on his post graduate studies at the same University of Ibadan in September 1989 and obtained M.Sc. in Ruminant Nutrition in September 1990. He secured a Ph.D. fellowship with the Alley Farming Network for Tropical Africa (AFNETA), at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan to investigate the potentials of Livestock Integration into Alley Farming between April 1994 and April 1998. This research work earned him a Ph.D. degree in Ruminant Nutrition / Forage Science June 1998.

Professor Arigbede started his career as a secondary school teacher after the completion of his M.Sc. degree in 1990 at the Community High School, Igbajo (January 1991 – March 1993), Owoope High School, Gbongan (March 1993 – March 1994) and Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (MANR), Osogbo (March, 1994- February, 1999) all in Osun State. While at the MANR, he served in several capacities especially as the desk officer, 4th Country A1 UNDP program of the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (FMANR).

Professor Arigbede joined the services of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in March, 1999 as Lecturer II and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Ruminant Nutrition / Forage Science in October, 2012. He has served in several capacities as the Chairman, Small Ruminant Technical Committee, Acting Head of Department and Head of Department, Pasture and Range Management, Hall Warden, Umar Kabir Male Hostel, Director, Centre for Innovation and Strategy in Learning and Teaching and currently, Director, Institute for Human Resources Development (INHURD). He is a member of several committees including; College Board, COLANIM, University Senate and Admission Committee among others.

Academically, he has taught several courses in the area of ruminant nutrition, dairy science and nutrition, forage conservation and utilization, forage seed production technology and range management. Also, he has supervised over 120 undergraduate projects, 12 M. Agric. dissertations and 8 Ph.D. theses. He has authored and co-authored about 65 Journal articles and 16 conference proceedings for international and local audience. His research focus is in the Area of evaluation and conservation of forage based feed resources and agro-industrial wastes for ruminant animal feeding systems. He is a member of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP), Nigerian Institute of Animal Scientists (NIAS), Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), International Goat Association (IGA) and the Society for Grassland Research and Development in Nigeria (SOGREDEN).

Spiritually, Prof Arigbede is a born again Christian and a member of the Apostolic church, Nigeria (TACN). He is the Staff adviser to The Apostolic Church Students’ Fellowship (TACSFON), FUNAAB chapter. He is happily married to Deaconess Arigbede, Oluwayemisi Deborah and they are blessed with children.

Completed research

  • Nutritive potentials of Indigenous Multi-purpose tree species as dry season ruminant livestock feed supplements.
  • Voluntary intake, digestibility, nutrient utilization and replacement value of some agro-industrial-by products and farm wastes by small ruminants.
  • In vitro gas production, In sacco dry matter and crude protein degradability of some feed ingredients and browse plants commonly used in livestock feeding.
  • Effects of manure and fertilizer application on dry matter yield and nutritional profile of some tropical pasture grasses and legumes in south western Nigeria.
  • Effects of management, season, planting age, distance and cutting intervals on biomass production and nutritive value of indigenous fodder plants.
  • Effects of plant species, season and anti-nutritional factors on rumen ecology, in-sacco DM degradability, in-vitro gas production, in-vivo voluntary intake and nutrient utilization by small ruminants fed indigenous fodder plants and crop residues.

Research in progress

  • Development of forage based total mixed rations and feed blocks for intensive ruminant animal production.
  • Evaluation and nutritional screening of lesser known tropical indigenous browse plants, leguminous shrubs and Multi Purpose Tree species for livestock feeding and agro-forestry technologies.
  • Utilization of unconventional oil seeds, tree seeds, legumes and crop by-products as supplements in least – cost concentrate rations for small ruminants production and fattening.
  • Effects of different processing and storage methods of foliage and seeds on the nutritive quality of forage based concentrate diets, feed blocks and complete rations for ruminant animals.
