Short Profile

Being an anatomic Pathologist, my research was focused on the areas of pathology, pathogenesis and diagnosis of diseases in different species of animal. Pathology of congenital diseases, infectious diseases, toxicological and those due to therapeutics have been documented. The pathogenesis of prion diseases, with particular focus on avian salmonellosis has been studied using immunohistochemical procedure. Diagnosis of congenital, infectious, noninfectious and neoplastic diseases were done based on gross postmortem findings, histopathology, immunohistochemical technics, serotyping and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Pathology of cryptorchidism and testicular hypoplasia, both congenital diseases and testicular atrophy in Nigerian Sahel bucks/goats, has been documented. The morphological pathology of chronic kidney failure in dogs has been studied in exotic breeds. Haematological and morphological pathology of internal organs of dogs, particularly the heart in trypanosomosis has also been documented. Pathology of foreign body induced hepatic and splenic abscesses have been studied in a horse. The pathology of rumen impaction in small ruminants has been documented and I have studied the pulmonary pathology of bovine tuberculosis. Also, pathology of fish diseases, including bacterial and neoplastic diseases in collaboration with other researchers has been documented. In snails, the pathology of the reproductive organs in period of aestivation has been studied in collaboration with other researchers.

Toxicological study describing the histopathological changes in the liver and kidney due to administration ofethanolic leaf extract of Allium cepa Linn bulb extract in the heart and haematological and serum biochemical parameters in laboratory animals have been studied in collaboration with other researchers.

Therapeutic study of the effect of Sildenafil citrate on the histology and sperm cell count during wound healing process in diabetic rats and that of Annonamuricata Linn in ameriorating reproductive complications in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats have been studied in collaboration with other researchers.

The pathogenesis of infectious diseases has been studied with particular interest in that of avian salmonellosis, which has been documented.

Diagnoses of congenital testicular abnormalities were done using physical examination of the testes, postmortem findings, morphometric studies and histopathology. Diagnosis of canine trypanosomosis using microscopic examination of thin blood and postmortem findings has been documented and that of Salmonella species using polymerase chain reaction and identifying the serotypes using the Kauffman-White Scheme has also been documented.  Other diseases including avian coccidiosis have been diagnosed using microscopic examination of the oocytes.

The main area of focus was in the pathology, pathogenesis and diagnosis of avian salmonellosis (PhD) which comprised of field study, laboratory investigation, and experimental study. The field study described the prevalence and gross pathology of visceral organs of chickens in natural outbreaks of salmonellosis in poultry farms in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States. The laboratory investigation described the histopathological changes in visceral organs of chickens and immunohistochemical study of the pathology. It also covers the aspect of microbiological study in which the Salmonella organisms were isolated and their serotypes determined using the Kauffman-White Scheme, and the use of these serotypes for the production of vaccine against avian salmonellosis was recommended. While the experimental study described the clinical signs, gross and histopathological changes and the pathogenesis of Salmonella Zega, one of the most predominant serotypes identified from the natural outbreaks was carried out using immunohistochemical technique.

My research work has contributed in the field of Anatomic Pathology, especially in the areas where pathological lesions consistent with specific diseases have been described, which clinicians, researchers in various field and pathologists can use in the diagnosis and understanding of the pathogenesis of diseases and for teaching of students.

The identification of the Salmonella serotypes in the study area has provided opportunity for the development of a more effective vaccine against avian salmonellosis in Nigeria, since most of the available vaccines in use are developed outside the country, which may not protect effectively against Nigerian strains of Salmonella.
