Prof. Olufemi Sunday Onifade was born sixty eight years ago. He grew up in Offa, Kwara state as a child up to 1965 and went to Minna, in Niger state to complete the Primary school education. He proceeded to Baptist High School, Jos for the secondary education up to 1972. Femi attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria for the pre degree and degree programmes in B.Sc. (Agric.). He obtained both the M. Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Animal Science from the same institution.
Prof. Onifade commenced his career in Forage Agronomy and Utilization at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), ABU, Shika, Zaria in 1978 after the Youth Service Scheme. While in Zaria he was involved in teaching, research and extension activities within and outside the University. He coordinated many research projects and served in different capacities in the institute / University. Prof. Onifade collaborated with international bodies / organizations such as GTZ, IITA, ILCA/ILRI, African Feed Resource Network (AFRNET), and national agencies: Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (FMARD), states Ministries of Agriculture, among others on different research/ extension projects. In addition, he taught courses and supervised post graduate students of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agric. ABU, Zaria.
In July, 2000, Prof. Onifade transferred his services to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2005. He served as Ag. Head of Department, Pasture and Range Management, Deputy Dean, College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM), Dean, Student Affairs, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial studies and as member of some committees in the University. Prof. Onifade has supervised 142 undergraduate projects, 26 M. Agric. dissertations and 9 Ph. D. theses in areas of forage production, conservation, utilization and ruminant nutrition. He has authored and co-authored 52 journal articles and 25 conference proceedings. Prof. Onifade presented his inaugural lecture on April 26, 2017.
Prof. Onifade was the President of the Society for Grassland Research and Development in Nigeria (SOGREDEN) from 2010 to 2017. He represented the Range and Pasture Discipline in the Council of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Scientists (NIAS). He is married to Prof. Comfort Onifade and they are blessed with children and grandchildren. Apart from scientific endeavours, Prof. Onifade enjoys travelling and as a lover of gospel songs he still ministers as a chorister in the church.
