Dr.

OYELAKIN Abiodun Sunday

Short Profile

Abiodun Sunday Oyelakin (Ph.D.) is a plant Cytogenetist and lecturer in the department of Pure and Applied Botany at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun state, Nigeria. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences (Botany option) (Second Class Upper Division) and a Master’s degree in Botany (Cytology & Cytogenetics) from the department of Biological Sciences at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB), now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). He bagged his Ph.D. degree in Botany (Cytology & Cytogenetics) from FUNAAB where he focused his research attention on “Biosystematics of pepper species (Capsicum L.) for gene pool accessions in Southwest Nigeria” under the supervision of Profs Muyiwa Segun Ayodele (now retired), Isaac Oludayo Daniel (now at the University of Manitoba, Canada) and David Adejare Agboola (now retired). He was at the at the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China for Ph.D. benchwork on molecular characterization of some accessions of pepper under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Wang Lihao. He has the ability to identify research gaps, design quality research, teaching and supervision, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a recipient of the TETFund-IBR Grant, Nigeria.

Dr. Oyelakin has published many research articles in the areas of molecular genetics and systematics in both local and international learned journals to his credit. He has also attended many conferences and training programmes. He has carried out series of research works, some of which include Genetic diversity of Capsicum in Southwest Nigeria using SSR Markers, Morpho-taxonomic studies of Crossacephalum, and intraspecific variability of Capsicum, to mention a few. My research interest includes Genetic Diversity Studies, Morphological and Molecular characterization of indigenous plants. He has been carrying out research activities, supervising and training both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

His teaching philosophy is to motivate students to develop their learning interests and critical thinking-to establish a learner-centred environment in the classroom. As such, he has developed skills to teach the students both major and non-major with field and laboratory works to stimulate their interest in plants. Collaborative learning is also central to his teaching philosophy to promote reflective thinking and improve the students’ communicative and trans-cultural skills.  He has the experience on the use of technology and computer-based materials in the classroom such as google-classroom and YouTube as helpful tools in the promotion of meaningful learning through collaborative work.  As an academic staff in the Department of Pure and Applied Botany, College of Biosciences, He has been involved in teaching on Plant genetics, Cytogenetics, Plant Taxonomy and biosystematics, Angiosperm Morphology and other plant related courses to undergraduate students as well as Plant Cytogenetics, Applied Cytogenetics, Cytology, and Plant Taxonomy to postgraduate students.

He has held several positions in the department and university such as the Coordinator, SIWES Programme, Secretary, Pure and Applied Botany Departmental Board, COLBIOS Representative in Webometric committee and COLBIOS Representative in sports committee. Dr. Oyelakin is the Coordinator of the department of Pure and Applied Botany from 2020 to date

He is a member of the Genetic Society of Nigeria and Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOSON).
